Web series / Which sail set for a Mini? The explanations of Hugo, The Sailing Frenchman

Hugo shares with us the life of a mini'iste in immersion. After the careening session afloat, he takes the start of the Mini in May from La Trinité. The opportunity for a precise explanation on his choice of downwind sail.

When you participate in a race, especially in the Mini, you have to do everything yourself. Watching the weather, preparing your race, taking care of the stewardship, resting and especially preparing your boat.

Today Hugo registered on the Mini Transat 2021 on the sailboat number 1014, has to realize his refit. Indeed, his small sailboat of 6,50 m does not have antifouling. That's why he takes it out of the water after each training session. But here in La Trinité, at the start of his Mini race in May, there are 80 Minis in the harbor to participate in the event. No question to take them all out of the water. Armed with a mask and a wetsuit, Hugo has to dive under his sailboat to clean the hull in order to get the best glide.

This time (it's not a habit), Hugo managed to place himself well on the starting line and was in 3rd position on this long downwind leg that took the fleet to Yeu Island. But as the sailor explains, his sail set is not perfectly adjusted for this wind and sea. As a result, he was unable to keep in touch with the boats in front, falling behind little by little.
