Web series / Maintenance and repairs for Hugo before the Mini Transat

Sailing is one thing, but you also have to maintain your boat if you want it to be in perfect condition for the races. It is to this winter maintenance that Hugo, The Sailing Frenchman is tackling.

Winter maintenance for Hugo who is preparing the Mini Transat with his Maxi 650. In addition to his truck in which he lives and for which he equips it with a solar panel in order to be autonomous in electricity, Hugo starts the preparation of the sailboat. The advantage is that he can park the truck/workshop at the foot of the boat.

Starting with the rudders. On a mini, there are two offset rudders on the transom. To check them and take the profiles back, Hugo dismantles them entirely, which allows a check of all the wearing parts. The rudder blade joints are made of aluminium and the shafts of stainless steel, which creates electrolysis. It is therefore necessary to insulate each part with Tef Gel.

Hugo also took advantage of the fact that the boat was dismasted to completely overhaul the rigging and to cleanly iron the electrical cables inside the mast. This will also be an opportunity to dismantle all the mast connections (shrouds, spreaders) to check that none are prematurely worn.

Then it's time to masturbate. Hugo carries out the opposite operation with the help of the 2 neighbouring boats and by holding the mast with 2 halyards. A simple operation on a small boat of 6.50 m.

Finally comes the first sea trial to validate the repairs and ensure the rigging is correctly adjusted. The transatlantic race is approaching and the racing season should begin, Hugo hopes to have a boat in the best of shape.
