Test / Gran Turismo 36, a cruising cruiser designed by Bénéteau

We tried the Gran Turismo 36 south of Barcelona. This comfortable and fun model characterizes the evolution of this Bénéteau power range, always sporty, towards more elegance and functionality

Pleasure in the line of sight

Half open with its roof open to the rear, perfect for day cruising, half cabin-cruiser with its interesting habitability, the sports coupé is a segment on the market that has been very popular for several decades. At Bénéteau, this range has been a great success for 15 years and has already been renewed in 2016 with the GT 40, a bestseller. Then the 46 and 50 arrived a year later. A new entry-level 32, based on the hull of the Flyer 10, was released in 2019. Now it's the 36-footer that was presented at La Napoule in September 2020, then it will be the turn of a new 41 to be unveiled in the spring of 2021. It will replace the GT 40 for a third generation. In other words, the renewal of this range is being done as quickly as the demand is pressing. As you would expect, these sporty coupes have a flattering look, good performance for fun on the water and you can do almost anything with them, to the delight of the whole family. Everyone will have fun on board.

An ambitious positioning

This GT 36, developed by Andreani Design, Style & Design and Bénéteau's Power Boat design office, is positioned at the crossroads between the ease of use of a small model (it is available with 2 x 300 or 2 x 350 bhp outboard engines or 2 x 270 or 2 x 300 bhp inboard engines) and the space and comfort of the largest boats in the range. The pleasure of piloting is an imperative without sacrificing the well-being of life on board. Every moment of the day is scrutinized with an appropriate response in the different functions. The line is modern, with large hull portholes optimising interior light and roof glazing providing a panoramic view thanks to the small footprint of the structural uprights, which are nevertheless highlighted by a metallic grey treatment. The deck at bow level, above the V, is almost rectangular, giving a space saving that is reflected all along the edge.

A set of specifications dedicated to the objectives

Mathilde Tertrain, the product manager of this Gran Turismo range, explains the different points that governed the design: "More space for lounging and sunbathing, natural ergonomics for cooking and eating, spacious cabins and a beautiful bathroom for the toilet" As a bonus, the power sunroof is standard. These are almost the specifications of the former 40 GT, and the French group is thus setting its milestones to achieve its objectives. The production, in a blasa glass/polyester sandwich, is relocated to the Delphia factory in Poland, which now only produces motor boats, as the yachts were deemed to be redundant with the group's brands.
