Test / Pricing and alternatives of the Gran Turismo 36, a rational and elegant sports coupe

The Gran Tourismo 36 is the first step in the renewal of Bénéteau's sports coupé range. It offers great performance and sensations on the water. Its fun and affordable character requires a range of options

The Gran Turismo 36 is offered as standard with Volvo D4's 2 x 300 hp at 225,000 euros ex VAT and with the joystick it costs 241,000 euros ex VAT. This price includes the hard top's electric sunroof, a must for the pleasure of navigation. In outboard version a good choice is given, because this boat is declined in USA version where the users are very fond of this type of motorization. 2 x 300 or 2 x 350 hp are available with Suzuki, Yamaha or Mercury Verado.

A list of essential options

Like almost all of its competitors, the quintessential personality of the Gran Tourismo 36 lies in the selection of optional equipment. These include a comfortable premium foredeck, elegant upholstery, a comfort pack for the cockpit fridge, electric toilets, microwave and an ambience pack for the LEDs, curtain mirrors and upholstery. The teak in the cockpit dressed our trial version. With the technical equipment, such as the 5 kW generator serving as energy for the air conditioning, the propeller or the underwater searchlights, we have to envisage a bill of more or less 300,000 euros excluding tax depending on the chosen configuration, which remains very reasonable in view of the services offered, which are rather comparable to boats with an extra metre.

What about the competition?

The sports coupé market has been well established in the yachting world for several decades. Promoted by brands such as Princess, Fairline or Sunseeker, these brands have gradually increased the size of their units and there are no longer any models below 40 or 45 feet. But many brands occupy this segment, starting with Jeanneau, the French group's rival with its Leader 36 . For almost the same price, it has no opposite bench seat in the cockpit. Its open-plan interior is better suited for weekends, as is the Searay 350 Sundancer which has the opposite bench. But his outside kitchen on the back deck deprives him of the fixed sunbathing area. The Bavaria S36 is significantly cheaper and its less sporty look is more reminiscent of a cabin-cruiser than a coupé with an interior table and one in the cockpit. Its versatility is interesting since it is offered in three versions with its two partitioned cabins: Open, Hard top or Coupé. On the Transalpine side, the new Sessa Marine C35 has no shortage of arguments in a very sporty Italian style. Its modular layouts allow you to isolate or decompartmentalize according to your desires.
