Test / Bénéteau Flyer 8, sea trial of a fun family dayboat

Although intended for a family program, the Bénéteau Flyer 8 offers great driving sensations and excellent seaworthiness. We sailed both models, the 350-hp Sundeck and the 300-hp Spacedeck. Let's find out more about the boat in this second part of our test.

A trial run in calm seas to test performance

Our test of the Bénéteau Flyer 8 took place in Port Ginesta, Spain. Conditions were perfect this October for checking the boat's speed performance, with flat seas and between 0 and 3 knots of wind. Not ideal conditions for testing the boat's passage through rough seas, but not the program we were looking for, as the Bénéteau Flyer 8 is more of an open hull for the family.

42 knots peak speed for the Flyer 8 Sundeck

The Flyer 8 Sundeck in our test is equipped with a 350 hp Suzuki outboard motor, and there are two of us on board. We lift off in 5 seconds and reach 20 knots in 7 seconds. Top speed of 42.6 knots is reached at 5,950 rpm. Cruising speed is between 20 and 25.2 knots, with fuel consumption of 36.5 liters/hour for the former and 46.2 liters/hour for the latter. These speeds are reached at 3,500 and 4,000 rpm respectively, and generate a fuel consumption of 1.8 L/mile. With a 340-liter fuel tank, this gives a range of around 180 miles.

As well as being an economical speed, it's also a great way to enjoy sailing with family and friends.

38 knots peak speed for the Flyer 8 Spacedeck

For our test of the Flyer 8 Spacedeck, our model was equipped with a 300 hp Suzuki outboard motor. The 340-liter fuel tank is full, and there are 4 of us on board. We lift off in 6 seconds and reach 20 knots in 7 seconds. Top speed of 38 knots is reached at a maximum rpm of 5,900, with fuel consumption of 106 liters/hour, or 2.7 L per mile. At 22 knots and 4,000 rpm, fuel consumption is most reasonable, at 43 L/h, or 1.9 L/mile, giving a range of around 175 miles. However, at 26 knots, fuel consumption is still reasonable at 55 L/h, or 2.1 L/mile.

A playful boat that's easy to handle

When it comes to navigation, the Flyer 8 offers excellent seaworthiness. The driving position of both models is perfect, with all instruments within easy reach. The AirStep hull remains very stable in turns and when passing waves - in this case the wake of other boats - as the water is calm. Playful, it doesn't breathe and is very easy to steer. You'll be able to transport your family safely, as well as have fun at the helm, since top speeds of 40 knots are easily attainable.
