Island Cruising Concept: the future of electric cruising according to Bénéteau

With the Island Cruising Concept, Beneteau presents a new concept in hybrid electric cruising boats. This 14-meter unit combines electric propulsion, solar panels and top-of-the-range comfort for a new approach to coastal cruising

Hybrid propulsion to reduce environmental impact

Faced with the challenges of ecological transition, Beneteau offers an innovative solution: hybrid electric propulsion combined with solar panels. With a range of 2.5 hours at 7 knots in 100% electric mode, the Island Cruising Concept is designed for short cruises, minimizing emissions and fuel consumption. Solar panels, capable of supplying up to 50% of the energy required, complete the package, while a combustion engine takes over when needed, providing extended range of up to 250 nautical miles.

A lighter hull to optimize energy efficiency

One of the main innovations of this concept lies in the design of the hull. Beneteau has rethought its design to limit vibrations and maximize the efficiency of electric propulsion. Thanks to a lighter structure and a shallow draught of just 0.85 m, this vessel is able to navigate in less accessible areas, offering appreciable versatility for yachtsmen. The hull design by Marc Lombard's architectural firm is that of a monohull at the bow, ending in 2 hulls separated by a tunnel at the transom, like a kind of catamaran. This design is intended to reduce drag when sailing and provide stability at anchor.

A design conceived for passenger comfort

Over and above technical performance, the concept places the emphasis on onboard comfort. The "mono-maran" layout, combining the advantages of a monohull and a catamaran, offers generous living spaces, ideal for group cruising. Inside, passengers enjoy 360° panoramic views, spacious cabins with en-suite bathrooms and a convivial outdoor galley. What's more, the fold-out platforms provide direct access to the sea, promoting an immersive and enjoyable nautical experience.

A response to the expectations of modern yachtsmen

When the project was first sketched out in 2024, Clément Himily, director of the CNB site in Bordeaux, said:

"Today's customers demand silence and space."

This vessel meets precisely these expectations, combining silent propulsion, reduced vibration and large living spaces. With a capacity of eight passengers, it is particularly suited to families or groups looking for an intimate and serene experience at sea.

A new approach to cruising in response to new regulations

Available from January 2025 in the British Virgin Islands via a partnership with Dream Yacht, the Island Cruising Concept marks a turning point in eco-responsible yacht charter. By democratizing access to this type of yachting, Bénéteau and Dream Yacht hope to encourage a more environmentally-friendly approach while maintaining a high level of comfort.

At a time when maritime regulations are evolving to reduce emissions, this type of project could inspire other industry players. Hybrid and solar technologies, still under development, offer promising prospects for combining performance, pleasure and respect for marine ecosystems.
