Test / Sea trials of the Aquila 36, a surprisingly easy power cat

We tried the Aquila 36 in the bay of Cannes. The calm weather and flat sea allowed us to push this catamaran into its entrenchments. Its speed and stability are marvellous.

Structural assets

The Aquila 36 is wide and the hulls are fairly thin at the waterline. Inside and outside steps are used for habitability as well as for good deflection. Another advantage is the distance between the outboard engines, which makes it easy to manoeuvre in port, well installed in the cockpit. Nevertheless, the option with the joystick is always interesting and brings a very good precision for the pontoon grip which can then be done by an inexperienced pilot.

Reassuring stability

As soon as we get out we put this catamaran to the test. Lively accelerations, sudden changes of direction at full throttle, quick U-turns and cutting the wake, we spare no effort to put it to the test, much more than in normal use. And it surprises us well. The Aquila 36 is surprisingly stable. Thanks to its narrow hulls, curves are swallowed at full speed without the feeling of overturning. We're dreaming of trying out the version with the horizontal foil, which should bring even more comfort to the sea. Equipped with the two 300 hp Verados the top speed of 32 knots is reached in less than thirty seconds. A 2 x 400 hp option is available and will probably exceed 40 knots, the 37 knots being verified with the 2 x 350 hp. All this is stress-free, as visibility on the water is excellent.

The comfort in navigation is exceptional. The rear seat can be used even at over 30 knots and at no time does one feel uncomfortable while moving around. At 20 knots and in calm seas, it is possible to live almost normally except for the noise which is omnipresent. However, the hoarse sound is rather pleasant to the ear and makes you forget this point all the more so as you quickly reach your destination.
