Boating license / From what power level is the fuse mandatory for a motorboat?

The circuit breaker is mandatory from a certain power. Which one? A small engine without a license of 6 hp? An engine of less than 10 hp? A power higher than 100 hp? Only on the brand new 600 HP Mercury?

Did you know: from what power level is a fuse cord mandatory on a motorboat?

The circuit breaker is the cord that connects the driver of a motorboat to his boat. This cord (usually red) will not prevent the boat from falling into the water. It will simply cut off the power to the motor if the driver leaves the helm. Less than a meter long, it disconnects if you move too far from the wheel.

Once unplugged, the motor stops instantly and cannot be restarted. That's why it's a good idea to have a backup solution if you need to restart to retrieve the driver, for example. An extra circuit breaker is not superfluous.

Mandatory from 4.5 kW

This circuit breaker is present on all outboard motors, regardless of power, as long as they are on tiller. It is also mandatory on personal watercraft and boats with outboard motors over 4.5 kW (6 hp).

However, it is not mandatory to wear this device... But, whether it is on a dinghy, a RIB or any other open boat, we strongly advise you to connect the pilot to this system, whatever the engine power. Indeed, accidents are very numerous and happen quickly.
