Did you know: above what power rating is a fuse cord mandatory on a motorboat?

The circuit breaker is the cord that connects the driver of a motorboat to his boat. This cord (usually red) will not prevent the boat from falling into the water. It simply cuts off the motor's power supply if the driver leaves the helm. Less than a metre long, it disconnects if you move too far from the steering wheel.
Once disconnected, the motor stops instantly and cannot be restarted. That's why it's a good idea to have a back-up solution in case you need to restart the engine to fish out the pilot, for example. An extra circuit breaker is not superfluous.

Mandatory from 4.5 kW
This circuit breaker is fitted to all outboard motors, regardless of power rating, as long as they are on tiller. It is also compulsory on personal watercraft and boats with outboard motors rated at over 4.5 kW (6 hp).
This device must be worn as soon as the engine is engaged. Whether on a dinghy, RIB or any other boat, we strongly recommend that you always connect the pilot to this system, regardless of engine power. Accidents happen, and happen fast.
