Millikan Boats: the M.9, an innovative solar-powered catamaran

With the M.9, Millikan Boats offers an electro-solar catamaran assembled in France. Designed for solar-powered sailing, it combines comfort, performance and respect for the environment.

The M.9, launched in 2024 by Normandy-based Millikan Boats, is an electric catamaran combining solar power, batteries and a kite. This model combines the sensations of a sailboat, the freedom of an internal combustion engine boat and the efficiency of a trawler, with zero sailing costs. In the summer of 2024, the demonstrator covered âeuros¯500 miles without spending a cent!

Entrusted to Vincent Lebailly Yacht Design, the M.9's architecture has been designed to maximize energy efficiency. In addition to its electric motors, a kite sail can be deployed, exploiting the wind for even freer sailing. In addition, in the absence of sun or wind, safety batteries provide 8 hours of autonomy at a speed of 6 knots.

The M.9 is 9.50 m long and 3.40 m wide (5.50 m with wings extended). Its solar panels, installed on the roof and folding wings, capture up to 20% additional energy thanks to their two-sided technology. The energy is stored in two battery banks totalling 32 kWh, powered by a 5.6 kWp solar system. Its two Bellmarine electric motors ensure silent propulsion, with a cruising speed of 8 knots and a top speed of 12 knots.

Each one-hour anchorage recharges around 15% of the batteries, ensuring smooth sailing between ports and anchorages. A shore charger is also included.

The interior layout, optimized for 6 berths and up to 8 people, offers optimum comfort. The two hulls each house a double cabin (200 x 120 cm), complemented by a convertible saloon (200 x 140 cm). The starboard cabin includes a shower room with WC and washbasin. With its wings folded back and awnings installed, the cockpit becomes an enclosed 12 m² cabin, ideal for sailing even when the wind picks up.

At the stern, two bathing platforms provide easy access to the water. In the forepeak, a trampoline and a U-shaped saloon with integrated lockers provide relaxation and storage space. The galley, located near the helm station, features a 100 L refrigerator, a sink fed by a 100 L freshwater tank, and a convivial dining area.

Thanks to its V2G functionality, excess solar energy can be sold back to the port's power grid, offering an economic return to owners.

Modern and connected, the M.9 integrates a Garmin screen for navigation and a mobile app to control its functions remotely. With its innovative design and solar-powered performance, the M.9 embodies a new era of environmentally-friendly boating.
