Test / 470 Regina: sea trial of an imposing and comfortable boat

We were able to test the 470 Regina, the largest model of the Italian shipyard FIM with its 15 m length. Although there are many of us on board, we were able to see the performance of the boat and its behavior, which holds no surprises for a model of this size.

Approval in category B for 14 persons

It is in bay of Cannes at the beginning of September 2022 that we benefited from a test at sea on the 470 Regina, which it was the world premiere. It is with 13 people on board that we went to sail on a calm sea with a light breeze. Nevertheless, with a boat of this size and this weight, 17,5 tons, it was not a disadvantage since the boat is approved in category B for 14 people.

Two 600 horsepower inboard engines

For our test, our model was equipped with two Volvo IPS 800 engines of 2x600 horsepower, its maximum power. As standard, two IPS 650s with 480 horsepower are installed. The large 1,500 L fuel tank was filled to 60% of its capacity, or 900 L. The shipyard also offers an outboard version with 3 to 4 425 horsepower engines.

Honorable performance for a 15 m model

The 470 Regina lifts off in 7 seconds, at a speed of 12 knots, and reaches 20 knots in 9 seconds. Its maximum speed peaks at 38 knots for a speed of 3050 rpm and a consumption of 235 liters/hour. Our measurements corroborate those of the shipyard which announces a maximum speed of 39 knots, while knowing the important number of people on board.

Its cruising speed is between 26 and 34 knots with a respective consumption of 155 and 202 L/h, that is to say an equivalent output of 5,9 L/mile. Knowing that the 470 Regina has a fuel tank of 1 500 L, its autonomy is thus brought to approximately 250 miles.

An unambiguous sea passage

In terms of seaworthiness, there is no surprise on the marine qualities of the hull given the size of the boat. The navigation is comfortable, the 470 Regina passes well the sea, even when it crosses the wake of another boat and even at high speed. The heel is not too pronounced when turning and the hull does not stall. Although heavy, the boat responds well to turns and course changes. It should satisfy the sporty but comfort-conscious clientele targeted by FIM.
