Test / Quicksilver Activ 605 Open: a versatile open family well positioned on the market

The Quicksilver Activ 605 Open, a six-meter model from Brunswick Marine, is part of a coherent range geared towards family boating. Launched in 2017, it remains the flagship model for this manufacturer, with the best sales for the European market. Here's a test of this version, which has remained virtually unchanged since its launch.

An entry-level model designed for family cruising

The Quicksilver Activ 605 Open is positioned between the Activ 505 and 675, in a range of fifteen models. Designed for daily cruising, it has no offshore ambitions, but is aimed at yachtsmen looking for a simple, accessible boat suited to sailing in sheltered waters. It is aimed primarily at families and first-time buyers, with a maximum capacity of seven people on board.

Featuring a V-shaped hull with two strakes, it promises fast acceleration and good stability. Its silhouette remains close to that of its big brother, the Activ 675 Open, with high freeboard and a streamlined deck layout.

Functional layouts and well-thought-out storage volumes

The deck layout features a central console framed by two 35 cm-wide side decks. The cockpit is well protected by high freeboards, with a 185 cm-long aft bench seat. The segmented backrest tilts to provide access to the bathing platforms. These are equipped with two lockers, mainly to protect the technical hatches.

Storage space is well distributed: under the rear bench, under the front seat and in the center console. The latter is ideal for storing the removable table or bags. The front sundeck, which can be adjusted with mattresses and wallet-type extensions, measures 168 cm by 130 cm.

Options include a bimini, cockpit shower, radio and Sport Pack.

Sound seaworthiness, 115 hp engine recommended

The sea trial revealed very good behavior, especially in a straight line. In bends, a slightly high engine mount can lead to premature ventilation, but the overall package remains stable. The model tested with "people on board", equipped with a 115 hp Mercury EFI, reached 31 knots at 5,700 rpm (fuel consumption 40 l/h), with a cruising speed of around 20 knots at 4,000 rpm (fuel consumption 20 :/h). The Open 605 is available with a maximum power rating of 150 hp, but this is likely to result in a boat with a sporty behavior, out of keeping with the family dimension.

The hull provides good passage in light chop, and turns are healthy, as long as the engine remains well trimmed (don't hesitate to play with the trim). The ergonomic cockpit is easy to handle. The well-sized windshield doesn't completely cut off the wind, letting the sensation of speed come through. In front of the pilot, the console is large enough to accommodate a small plotter/depth finder.

Competitive price positioning

Priced from ?36,020 with a 115 hp Mercury, the Quicksilver Activ 605 Open remains competitive with other six-meter open boats. It is also available at ?39,360 with a 150 hp Mercury.

Compared with similar models (Leader 6.5 CC, B2 Marine Cap Ferret 650 Open), the Quicksilver relies on clever ergonomics and a good finish. However, it suffers from non-existent cabin access, for which you'll have to opt for the Sundeck version.

The quality/price ratio, combined with the brand's reliability and a well-known Mercury engine, make it a well-considered choice for boaters on a budget.
