Test / Focchi, a range of fast RIBs designed by a racing driver

The Focchi shipyard produces a range of very seaworthy RIBs. The brand is mainly present in Italy but is gaining recognition in other markets due to the sailing quality of its boats, which we were able to verify by testing the Focci 640, equipped with the new Suzuki DF140B engine.

Deep V hull inspired by offshore RIBs

Based in Ravenna, Italy, since the 1970s, the Focchi shipyard offers a range of RIBs built in Tunisia with an exceptional hull. Both stable and comfortable in navigation, the sensations of piloting are also there. The Focchi has a deep V hull on the front which flattens on the back, guaranteeing a fast lift off. It must be said that the brand was developed by a former offshore racing pilot and that their DNA is therefore speed.

The range, mainly developed in Italy, is composed of several models from 3.50 to 8.40 m. Designed with the professional market in mind, these RIBs are used for assisting and teaching sailing, diving, military boats, etc. There are also more farniente models with sunbeds on the bow and bench seats with backrests on the rear of the cockpit. Some models are equipped for fishing with rod holders. Their large foredeck is a feature appreciated by fishermen to move around freely.

The hull of the boats is made of polyester reinforced with Kevlar fibers and the floats are made of hypalon neoprene. The construction without moulding is a guarantee of lightness. Even in the "pleasure" version, the layout remains simple and devoid of superfluous items, always with the objective of reducing weight. The console is central for easy circulation and a clear view.

A test model for professionals

We had the opportunity to discover the brand during a test on Lake Maggiore in Italy. Our model, the Focchi 640, was equipped with the new 140 hp Suzuki engine with hydraulic steering. This is the steering system installed on all boats, regardless of their size. This model is very simply equipped with two side seats with backrest on the rear polyester reinforcement, an individual bolster, an ergonomic and not very wide but sufficiently protective center console and a seat on the console. The front deck is free of any fittings as it is a sailing school RIB.

Guaranteed speed and unquestionable stability

If the sheltered water of Lake Maggiore did not allow us to test the boat in rough sea conditions, it nevertheless allowed us to establish a nice top speed of 43.4 knots at 6300 rpm for a consumption of 46 l/h. The lift-off is reached after 4.81 seconds and the speed of 20 knots is reached after 8.03 seconds.

The optimal cruising speed is between 20.9 knots at 3500 rpm for a consumption of 11.8 l/h, i.e. a consumption of 0.56 l/mile and 25.5 knots at 4000 rpm for a consumption of 0.57 l/mile. At 28.4 knots, or 4500 rpm, fuel consumption increases only slightly to 0.77 l/mile.

When sailing, the behavior is very healthy and seaworthy. The hull stays flat and the boat is very stable even in turns. The steering is fluid and easy, with a good response of the boat to changes in direction. In a straight line, the feeling of speed is pleasant, as is the steering position. The Italian importer ensures a smooth and comfortable passage in rough seas.

With its well-designed hull, it is understandable that Focchi has been able to seduce professionals looking for speed and stability. The brand deserves to be known in France and it could well be that these fast RIBs will be launched there.
