Web series / Deciphering - Why start amateur shipbuilding?

Lucas started building a wooden sail and oar canoe, La Vivacia. You were able to follow the first video episodes of this construction. Today, he looks back and explains how he got started on this project.

Lucas is 28 years old, living in Eastern France, he has no particular skills as a sailor. And yet a period in his life of apprenticeship as a roofer made him discover Brittany and boats. Back home, settled with a large workshop, he embarked on this project to build his boat.

Many hours were then spent browsing the forums to question amateur builders. Then it is the choice of the architect and the choice of the model that must be decided.

Lucas doesn't hesitate to watch videos, buy books, read up on things before he starts. For this purpose, it will be well assisted by the study plans provided by the architect François Vivier. Then comes the time to buy wood, specific species for shipbuilding that are more difficult to supply when you are not at the seaside.

And it was just after the start of the project that Lucas decided to share his work in video. It's a kind of elevator return: if he managed to get help from forum participants, why can't he send his travail?? The choice of videos is quickly made. They make it possible to show the gesture of woodworking, more than just photos.

Why Vivacia?

To conclude, Lucas explains the choice of the future name of his boat: La Vivacia. It is the name of a boat in a book series by Robin Hobb "Les aventuriers de la mer", fantastic stories that made him dream as a child and made him want to become "an adventurer of the sea" too.
