The Rothschild family has a very special bond with boats. It all began in 1876 when Baroness Julie de Rotschild christened her own boat La Gitana . This steamboat is designed to sail on Lake Geneva, at the foot of the family home. With this boat, she becomes the fastest "Yachting Lady" in the world with a record at 20 knots.
It wasn't until Baron Edmond de Rothschild came into business that the family's supremacy on the oceans was reborn. With the ketch Gitana IV, he won the Fastnet in 1965. But above all he shared the pleasure of being at sea with his family and passed the virus on to his son Benjamin. Today, this banker, still at the helm of the company, perpetuates the family tradition and arms his boats, which continue to be called Gitana.
The book looks back on this incredible family trail. All the boats are described, from the oldest to the last Gitana 16 racing today in the Vendée Globe. The search for performance is at the heart of the subject. Just as in the management of their business, the Rothschilds have always sought to maximise their subject matter, in search of the best. That's why they tried their hand at multihull racing and today are working hard on the foils of the flying boats.
This splendid book recounts the whole adventure. It will be a reference work for sailing lovers who have been following the Gitana adventure for many years. But it will also be able to show the determination of an entire family for business and a taste for fighting spirit.
Superbly illustrated and very large format, this is a beautiful book that he will be pleased to receive at the end of the year. And a nice link, for those who will have the chance to discover the exhibition at the Nautic in Paris.. Available to order by clicking here
