Beautiful Book: Boats that fly

Boats that fly

Tabarly had seen (almost) just by saying that"all boats will fly". Boating now has its book. A kind of bible of texts and images that describe well the pleasure of sailing over water.

It's not the bible, but it's a bible of flying boats. François Chevalier has created this book in collaboration with the photographer Gilles Martin-Raget. These two have known each other for a long time via the monthly magazine Voiles et Voiliers for which they have collaborated since the beginning (or almost).

Les Bateaux qui volent

François Chevalier is a naval architect and illustrator for the magazine. He has designed many historical sailboat plans and remains a reference in the history of naval architecture. It is he who signs the texts and draws the plans of this beautiful book on flying sailboats.

Les Bateaux qui volent

Taking examples of sailboats, this book traces the history of this principle which consists in making boats take off to eliminate friction and gain speed (or consumption for motorboats). From the little ones, like the foil Moth or the Flying Phantom to the bigger ones like the Hydroptère or the America's Cup Class, all are told and above all photographed through Gilles Martin-Raget's lens Available to order: click here

With the many images that make access very pleasant to read, the highly documented and precise texts make this book a beautiful entry into the subject to understand the craze for these flying sailboats. A glossary and a brief schematic explanation of the physical principle of foils will facilitate access to those who want to understand how they work.

Les Bateaux qui volent

This book delighted us by its contents and even if we can reproach a print on a mat paper - a glossy paper would have given more power to the photos - here is a beautiful idea of gift for all the lovers of the sea and the crazy machines which sail there Available to order: click here
