Much more than just a race story
It had been a long time since I?d enjoyed reading an account of an ocean race this much. *A Crazy Challenge* could have been nothing more than the diary of a long-delayed childhood dream come true: that of Jean d?Arthuys, who set sail around the world aboard *Triana*, a Swan 53, in the 2023?2024 Ocean Globe Race. Of course, there?s the preparation, the legs of the race, the weather, the technical problems, and the navigation. But very quickly, the book takes on another dimension. The race becomes the backdrop for a much more personal story.
The sea at its most human
What moved me most was his ability to describe the sea without constantly seeking to glorify it. Jean d?Arthuys captures the almost childlike joy of being on the water, but also the cramped quarters, the exhaustion, the tensions, and the difficulties faced by a crew confined for weeks aboard a sailboat. And then there are those moments when everything slows down: a bird, a sunrise, a few minutes of contemplation in the middle of the ocean. These moments matter just as much as the maneuvers or the route choices.
Setting out to pursue an old dream
The book is also a reflection on the passage of time and on the decisions that shape a person?s life. The author looks back on his origins, his journey, his commitments, and that dream from his youth that he finally decided to pursue. Why set out when nothing compels you to do so? Why accept the discomfort, the risk, the isolation, and the challenges of communal living? It is here that *Un défi de fou* transcends a mere account of a round-the-world race and resonates with readers who know nothing about the intricacies of offshore sailing.
In the Wake of Bernard Moitessier
And that?s also why I thought of Bernard Moitessier as I closed the book. Not just because the two sailors might have followed the same route or experienced the same adventure, but because, in Jean d?Arthuys?s writing, the sea becomes a way of talking about something quite different from the miles traveled. Like *La Longue Route* in its day, *Un défi de fou* can be enjoyed far from the docks. Sailors, racers, landlubbers, and even teenagers can all find their own way into it. In my view, that?s what makes the best seafaring stories so successful: you open them for the journey, and you close them thinking about your own life.
