Test / Terhi 480C: A boat with cabin for all-weather cruising!

Terhi 480 C

Finnish boatbuilder Terhi Boats is renowned for its traditional-looking boats for scouring inland waters and the nooks and crannies of archipelagos. With the Terhi 480C, it has taken up the challenge of adding a cabin boat to its range, so that you can keep on sailing, even in the rain!

A benchmark for Finnish boating

While the general public often knows Finland for such flagships as the sailboat builders Swan or Baltic Yachts or the motorboats Targa, the country, with its thousands of square kilometers of lakes and inland waters, the Finnish boating industry is also an expert in small craft. Terhi Boats has its origins in a brand of outboard motors created in the 1950s.

After having a few models built by fiberglass subcontractors, Terhi set up its own factory in 1972 to produce its own small boats in ABS, an innovative and original choice of material for the boating industry, and one that facilitated mass production. The Terhi 240, Terhi 310 and Terhi 390 were soon produced in thousands of units.

In over 50 years, the company, now TerhiTec, has grown with the acquisition of the Sea Star and Silver brands, and has gone from strength to strength, with 235,000 boats sold in 20 countries.

Offer shelter in a boat less than 5 metres long

Terhi already offered a 4.80 m boat model in several versions: double console, sport or bowrider. Despite windscreens, crew protection remains limited on such a small boat. The Finnish shipyard therefore chose to develop a cabin version with the Terhi 480C.

Starting from the existing hull, a cabin module has been added, in an attempt to keep the weight down, as the impact on stability and dunnage remains significant on such a small unit. The pilot and co-pilot sit in the cabin, protected from both rain and sea spray. Other passengers make do with the rear bench seat, which can be sheltered and integrated into the cabin by means of a bimini system and removable canvas.

Almost everything a grown-up would want!

The Terhi 480C is still a small boat, but you could almost say it's a big one! Approved in design category C, it can accommodate 5 passengers like the bowrider, despite the additional 50 kilos. Weighing in at 440 kilos without engine and just 1.85 m wide, it's still easy to transport in a small package. It will easily carry a family and their two (preferably young) children for any type of activity, from fishing to family picnics, while offering the added benefit of shelter in case of inclement weather or insistent sunshine. Versatility at its best.
