Test / Genesis of the Zodiac X10CC: developing a multi-purpose unit that breaks with previous models

For this new model, the Zodiac design office has created a unit combining the advantages of an inflatable with those of a rigid hull. The main objective is to appeal to US customers, while adapting to the European market.

Made in France for Medline 9's big brother

After 3 years of development and almost a million euros of investment, Zodiac has added the largest semi-rigid boat produced by the French shipyard to its catalog. But unlike the rest of the range, whose production is based in Tunisia, the X10CC is built in France, at Gujan Mestras to be precise.

The joint shareholding of the Couach and Zodiac shipyards saw fit to keep production of this top-of-the-range unit in France, close to Guy Couach's teams, who benefit from the know-how acquired in the construction of numerous yachts.

And the commercial name, X10CC? The X is both a reference to the number 10 and to the modular side of the boat, 10 for length and CC for "center console".

A step hull developed by a Finnish firm

In contrast to the usual Zodiac production, or to the many Italian shipyards that produce semi-rigid boats, the design of the Zodiac X10CC was entrusted to the Finnish firm Navia, which has made a name for itself by working with the Axopar shipyard, which has enjoyed great success over the last decade.

The result is a unit with an excellent hull, an almost straight bow, and resolutely modern, angular lines. The tour de force of combining two cockpits and a cabin on a hull barely 10 meters long is a success, but the choice of colors for the floats and upholstery will be very important to ensure that this large semi-rigid retains a pleasing line.

In this respect, customers are spoilt for choice, with three different colors available for both the float and the upholstery.

But why keep these small floats on such a promising hull? Zodiac chose to keep the float because of its many advantages. Approval as a semi-rigid can accommodate up to 20 people, compared with around 10 for a similar size. What's more, the float offers protection when maneuvering in port, and improves stability when turning thanks to extra support.

Close to the 60-knot mark

The North American market has higher requirements in terms of top speed on this type of unit. That's why this X10CC is capable of reaching 60 knots with the recommended 2 x 400 hp engines. Knowing that the maximum motorization is 900 hp...

But for family use and a coastal program, 2 blocks developing 300 hp will be more than enough to make the most of this modular unit.
