Test / Leader 7.5 WA Series 3, a beautiful evolution of a best-seller from Jeanneau

An emblematic model of family dayboats, the Leader has dominated the market for nearly 40 years. With this new 7.5 WA Series 3, Jeanneau is renewing a best-seller whose concept has already proven itself.

An open hull with dynamic lines

Manufactured in injection, the Leader 7.5 WA Series 3 presents a modern and sporty line. The hull is an evolution of the previous version, for a hull length of 7.37m and a width of 2.51m, which maintains it in the European road gauge. Designed in collaboration by Sarrazin Design and Michael Peters for the hull, this Leader 7.5 WA is distinguished by a beautiful modularity which brings a lot of user-friendliness to the last born of the Leader family.

A modular cockpit, for fishing or for lunch

Access to the boat is easy via the two large bathing platforms leading directly into the cockpit. The cockpit is modular and can be transformed into a deck saloon, thanks to three folding benches. A central polyester table allows 6 guests to sit comfortably.

The bottom of the cockpit is occupied by a large central locker equipped with jacks and a second longitudinal locker that can accommodate mooring lines, fenders or fishing rods.

The cockpit is equipped with two bolster seats, or an optional leaning post. This one will be equipped with a gas stove or a transparent livewell.

The large glass windshield incorporates a nice handrail that falls nicely under the hand while sailing.

The solar protection of the passengers is ensured by a rigid T-top (optional) supplemented by shade cloths at the front and rear.

As the cockpit is off-center, access to the foredeck is best done through the port side passageway, which is 10 cm wider. The foredeck has a large sundeck with a folding backrest. The anchor locker, of decent dimensions, will receive a windlass which is also optional.

A cabin allowing a small cruise

The WA cabin has ingenious accommodations for this size of boat. Access is through a sliding door and large hull windows provide plenty of light. The headroom is limited to 1.5m but there is plenty of storage space: a sink unit with a refrigerator, an interior lounge that can be converted into a double berth and a separate toilet. Considering the small volume of this one, it is a pity that it does not benefit from any ventilation.

An eye-catching and safe hull

Our sailing took place in spring conditions, with a 15 knot westerly flow and a small chop on the water. Our Leader 7.5 WA Series 3 was equipped with a Yamaha V6 block developing 250 HP with electric control.

With two passengers and a full tank of gas, we reached a maximum speed of 37 knots. At an engine speed of 3700 rpm, our Leader 7.5 is cruising at a speed of 22 knots for a consumption of 36 l/hour. The 330-liter tank will give you a range of about 200 miles at cruising speed.

In tight bends, the Leader 7.5 WA stays in its lines by keeping a low heel, and confirms its family temperament. Nevertheless, the 250 hp of our Yamaha make this hull nervous and playful, and will be able to provide some sensations to its pilot. Except to pass the 40 knots mark in top speed, it does not seem relevant to us to have recourse to the maximum power admitted, namely 300hp.

Budget and balance sheet

The Leader 7.5 WA Series 3 is offered at an introductory price of 71,720 euros (including tax). Our test model, with options and equipped with a Yamaha 250 hp engine, was priced at 104,764 euros, including tax. As usual, the list of options includes essential equipment that the manufacturer could include in the basic version. But for this budget, you get a versatile and accomplished boat, allowing you to alternate family outings, fishing trips or short coastal cruises.
