Test / Merry Fisher 795 Sport, a marine SUV for family sailing

Replacing the Marlin range, the Merry Fisher Sport Series 2 has a rugged look designed for family use. Closer to the land-based concept of the SUV, this Merry Fisher offers a wide range of activities thanks to its increased modularity and safe handling.

Merry Fisher's "sport" line includes three models, the 695, the 795 and the 895. The 795 Sport Series 2 is the middle size of the range. It has the same hull as the Weekender version, but with additional exterior space. The 795 is equipped with a central wheelhouse, leaving wide and secure gangways that allow free movement between the aft cockpit, the inner cockpit and the foredeck.

Access to the boat is via the two bathing platforms on either side of the engine, but only the starboard one is equipped with a handrail. The large cockpit offers ample space for a variety of activities. The three folding benches transform this large space into a cockpit lounge, which can be protected by a telescopic aft cap in the wheelhouse extension.

For fishermen, a cutting board is installed in front of the engine, while an optional livewell will find its place in front of the bathing platform. Large lockers in the bottom of the cockpit will accommodate fishing rods and other equipment.

An optional kitchen is also proposed by the Vendée shipyard

On the starboard side, the bulwark is marked by a gate, which facilitates the boarding in case of long-side mooring or on a catway.

The front cockpit is deep and offers a 2 e it is a living space thanks to a "U" shaped bench and a removable table, which can be transformed into a sunbathing area. It can be protected by a shade cloth.

A welcoming wheelhouse

Access to the wheelhouse is through two sliding side doors. The layout is available in two versions:

-a first one with a large rear window that optimizes the circulation with the outside, and a third interior seat

-a second one with an interior bench

At the front, a small double berth is next to an optional closed toilet. This sleeping area cannot claim to be comfortable to spend several nights in. Numerous storage spaces and a refrigerator are located under the pilot and co-pilot seats.

In navigation, a family behavior

The Merry Fisher 795 Sport Series 2 is only offered in an outboard version. Our test model was equipped with a 250-horsepower Yamaha V6, which is the strongest engine adaptable to this unit.

Our test was conducted in 15 knots of wind, with a short Mediterranean chop. The fuel tank, with a capacity of 200 liters, was full and the crew consisted of four people. We reached a top speed of 32 knots and our cruising speed was 18 knots at an engine speed of 4000 rpm. Fuel consumption was 43 liters/hour. The 795's program is focused on versatility and family use, but despite its 250 hp, the Merry Fisher 795 lacks a little dynamism and will not satisfy a pilot looking for some driving sensations.

At rest, the Merry Fisher 795 Sport Series 2 has great stability that will be welcome when anchored or fishing.

Budget and balance sheet

Jeanneau has developed a model that is solely dedicated to fishing to make it adaptable to a multitude of nautical activities, a segment usually dominated by Scandinavian products. On the budget side, the Merry Fisher 795 Sport Series 2 is offered at a launch price of 73,500 euros (including tax). With this introductory price, it is well positioned against the competition, but the future owner will have to select a long list of options to properly equip his boat. Our test model, well optioned and equipped with the maximum power, was priced at 118 500euros TTC.

The art of compromise is always difficult for multipurpose boats. We liked the equipment, even if the versatility is a bit at the expense of the pleasure of piloting.
