European Yacht of the Year 2019, 5 sailboats for the family cruise

Here is the selection of the five sailboats dedicated to family cruises. These models from 7.47 m to 14.60 m are all equipped with cabins (or berths) to spend one to several nights on board. And if you find mostly mass-produced sailboats on large construction sites (to optimize the price-quality ratio), don't miss the more intimate units, which are worth it.

Family models from 25 to 35 feet for a weekend at sea

This category of "family sailboats" includes boats dedicated to cruising. They must provide enough cabins and comfort for family sailing, but also be easy to manoeuvre, alone or in pairs, as is often the case in family cruises. But beyond versatility, these boats must also be affordable, which is why many come from large production yards.

In the past, models of this type of program focused on the 30 to 45 foot segment. But the market is giving way to more and more large units, which are also more sophisticated year after year. This trend is driven by charter activities, which require more and more space. Indeed, due to their nature and attractive price, family cruising yachts are often offered in charter fleets. But there are nevertheless different models, proposed by small shipyards.

Beneteau Oceanis 46.1

This 14.60 m sailboat will be the successor to the Oceanis 45 launched in 2012. It is again a plan from the architecture firm Finot Conq. It further rejects the precepts imagined for this range. Thanks to its bilge hull, the Oceanis 46.1 offers king size cabins. With a 4.50 m master beam almost at the stern of the boat, the cockpit is really huge on the Oceanis 46.1 and decorated with two lateral meridians.

The hull windows are immense. They provide light and a sea view from the square, offered in a classic configuration. By adding just 15 cm more to the hull length, the architect managed to fit 5 cabins in this cruiser (the Oceanis 45 has only 4 cabins maxi).

Dufour 390 Grand Large

This 11.93 m sailboat is exactly where it belongs in the heart of the monohull market. This new model gains in finish by taking inspiration from the large yachts in the Exclusive range. Thus the new 390, still designed by the architect Felci, takes up the new insert in the shell plating which emphasizes the hull windows. There is also the front porthole, in the front cabin, which provides light and forward vision.

The 390 is designed for charter, as well as the owner's market, offering up to three cabins and three bathrooms on a 12-metre long boat. Dufour has planned a self-steering jib and even presents his sailboat with a furling mainsail. Probably to show that it will be an easy sailboat to manoeuvre by all boaters.

Hallberg-Rassy 340

While its price may be far from what is expected from a 34-foot family cruiser, this 10.36-metre sailboat offers rare services for a boat of this size. That is why he is part of this selection. The Swedish shipyard has worked for a long time with the architect Frers on the volume and functionality of a 10 m hull.

Thus, there is a very large and well protected aft cockpit, with the possibility, as an option, of installing a double wheel steering system. There are two rudders, as on the 44, which should make navigation easier, and a swimming platform, a first for a boat of this size. Inside, there are two cabins - one at the front and one at the back, as well as a saloon and a kitchen, all very bright and wooded, a hallmark of the Nordic site.

Mojito 1088

The Mojito 1088 extends the concept of the Mojito 888, but with offshore and travel capabilities. Designed by Pierre Roland, this 11-metre sailboat, this model dedicated to fast cruising, has a raised and glazed roof to bring space and light inside, as well as a panoramic view from the saloon.

It offers up to 3 cabins and has a lifting keel as standard to anchor as close to the coast as possible. Inside, the layout is simple with a Breton bed in the front, a large saloon with benches on each side and central table and two cabins in the rear.

Swallow Coast 250

With only 24 feet (7.57 m), this sailboat offers the possibility of sleeping four people on board (and five if you remove the frigo?!!), with a closed toilet. This first model of the British manufacturer's new range of modern sailboats combines a rigging for sailing, but also turns into a motor boat, with the installation of an outboard of maximum 70 horsepower in the centre of the cockpit. Covered by a hood, it does not interfere with travel on board and its position - on the contrary - optimizes performance and weight distribution. With the largest engine, the maximum speed of 15 knots can be reached.
