Test / Wellcraft 435, a wide choice of options and competition on the lookout

© Nicolas Massines

For maximum customization, Wellcraft offers a range of option packages on its Wellcraft 435. A few figures and a closer look at the competition in this final part of our test.

An extensive list of options

The Wellcraft 435 is available from ?735,000. However, you'll need to add a number of options if you want to experience offshore cruising with your family.

For this purpose, Wellcraft offers a Finishes pack at ?21,760, including bow thruster, complete protection kit, lighting, flaps, Fusion audio and wheelhouse blinds. Three other packs are also available: an electronics pack at ?15,000, an audio pack at ?4,250 and the 2024 comfort pack with dockside freshwater intake and multifunction steering wheel for ?4,280.

There are no fewer than 42 other options in the catalog, which may seem very high, but allows almost total customization of the boat.

These include the Seakeeper 3 at ?56,380, underwater spotlights at ?9,000, 3 x 200 Ah lithium batteries at ?11,810, a Garmin reversing camera at ?1,360 and the Garmin 800 AIS at ?1,770. Garmin Fantom and Open Array Dome radars require the electronics pack. If you want to install synthetic teak on the cockpit, rear bathing platform, side decks and forward cockpit, you'll still have to pay ?14,600.

Serious competition

If we're going to compare the Wellcraft with its competitors, we can only start by looking directly at the Bénéteau group. The DB43, also designed by Michael Peters, offers fairly similar performance, equipped inboard with 2 x 440 hp from Volvo for a price of around ?750,000. Layouts and features are relatively similar, even if the DB is not aimed as far offshore.

Yes, as we all know, comparison is not reason, but the Bavaria S45's navigation and habitability programs are quite similar to those of its German neighbors, with priority given to comfort rather than exploration.

Let's take it a step further, this time to the Finns and the Axopar brand, whose ambitions are very, very close to those of the Wellcraft 435. The 45 XC, for cross cabin, also features side bulwarks, a triple outboard engine and a hull built for adventure. The thrill also comes at a price, starting at ?620,000.

Let's stay in the north with XO Crossover and its EXPLR 44 for Explore . Available as a 3 x 450 or 2 x 600 outboard. A unit built for the high seas with very high ambitions. A very distinctive personality and a serious competitor to the Wellcraft, with a starting price in excess of ?600,000.
