Test / Highfield Sport 700, relaxation combined with excellent sports performance

Highfield has built a solid reputation with its aluminum-hulled RIBs. This characteristic is also found on the new Sport range, of which we were able to test the Sport 700, a 6.77 m long semi-rigid for the Mediterranean, with excellent marine qualities.

A range dedicated to lazing around

Launched at the end of 2020, Highfield's Sport range focuses on leisure and comfort on board. Composed of 11 models from 3 to 8 meters, it features a Mediterranean design combined with Italian style, with boats that are well equipped and have a high quality finish. We went to Brest, the French stronghold of the Australian manufacturer, to test the two largest models in the range, the Sport 700 and 800, and the least we can say is that the sea conditions were perfect for testing the sturdiness and marine qualities of these boats. A good force 7 to start with, with waves of 1 m to 1.50 m, and to finish with gusts of more than 50 knots!

A very equipped and comfortable RIB

The Sport 700 - 6.77 m long - has an aluminum hull like all the models in the range. This hull is borrowed from the Patrol 700 euros semi-rigid, which has accompanied many offshore races, including the Vendée Globe. The imposing 53 cm diameter floats are available in neoprene hypalon or PVC.

At the stern, the Sport 700 has an imposing polyester block with two storage hatches, overhanging the bathing platforms dedicated to swimming, with a ladder on the starboard side. A pull-up mast allows for water sports. The return on the floats allows both to move easily on the back euros in particular for the engine handling euros and to secure the cockpit deeply embedded. There is a double bench seat, which associated with the folding table of the polyester block receiving the seats of piloting makes it possible to transform space into corner meal. However, don't expect to move around once you are seated, as the space is really small.

The cockpit is central with a large console to install the electronics. It is protected by a high windshield with pillars for navigation or moving around the boat. The two pilot and co-pilot seats are very comfortable and allow standing or sitting driving. We will also appreciate the handrail installed on the back to stand up while navigating in the cockpit.

The front deck has a large sunbathing area with a backrest integrated into the davit, under which there are storage compartments. Storage is also found under the front seat of the console, equipped with handles to hold on to. A table with cup holders can also be installed here.

In general, Highfield has put the emphasis on finishing touches, with a rather fine upholstery, a teak-look floor and acidic upholstery colors (orange, red, euro). Several options are also in the catalog, such as a bimini, a deck shower or a carbon dashboard.

Robust and very marine

For our test ride, the Sport 700 was powered by a 150 hp Honda engine, the maximum power allowed being 200 hp. It is thus by a notice of great freshness that we could test our mount. If the sea conditions were really bad in the Anse du Moulin Blanc, in Brest, we were also able to sail more sheltered on the Elorn, passing the Albert-Louppe bridge.

If its deck plan lends itself to lazing around and relaxing with the family, its marine qualities make it a real ally in rough conditions. Its aluminum hull passes through the sea with ease and lightness, without ever hitting. The Sport 700 easily navigates through waves over 1 m, even at high speeds. It remains easy to ride and you feel comfortable and safe even in these conditions. Its handling is very seaworthy, even in tight turns.

The Sport 700 lifts off in 5 seconds and goes from 0 to 20 knots in 6.2 seconds. It reaches a top speed of 39.8 knots at 6,100 rpm (54.2 lph) and cruises at around 27.7 knots at 4,500 rpm (26.2 lph). Like the other models in the range, the Sport 700 requires at least 40% positive trim to maintain its performance.
