Amicale Grand Banks Méditerranée: 35 years of passion and nautical tradition

It's an unmissable event for lovers of elegant, seaworthy trawlers. At the beginning of June, the Amicale Grand Banks Méditerranée organized its 35th annual gathering, confirming the vitality of a circle of insiders united by a shared passion for these boats of character. A look back at the history of this emblematic association, born of a love for ocean cruising and the American naval tradition.

The origins: a community spirit around Grand Banks

The Amicale Grand Banks Méditerranée was founded in 1990, at a time when Grand Banks trawlers, still rare on the French coast, were attracting a handful of enlightened sailors. Inspired by the classic trawlers of the northeastern United States, Grand Banks trawlers combine timeless lines, stability at sea and cruising autonomy. Originally built in Hong Kong, then in Singapore and finally in Malaysia, these timelessly charming boats have become the symbol of a certain art of living on the water.

The first Grand Banks owners on the Mediterranean coast came together naturally, sharing a desire to sail together, and to exchange technical advice and stopover tips. It didn't take long for an amicale to be formed, uniting enthusiasts around simple values: conviviality, mutual aid, and the transmission of nautical culture.

A friendly association like no other

35 years later, the Amicale Grand Banks Méditerranée has over 80 members, spread across the Côte d'Azur, Corsica, the Catalan coast and sometimes far beyond. Each year, the association organizes a major gathering, in a different port of the French or Italian Mediterranean, sometimes even in the Balearic Islands. These events are an opportunity to share the sea, sailing stories and the love of the Grand Banks.

The program combines flotilla outings, technical visits, convivial meals on board or ashore, and even nautical elegance competitions. We welcome couples, families and friends, often with several generations on board. The atmosphere is warm and informal, true to the spirit of the pioneers of trawler cruising.

35th edition: a focus on tradition

For this 35th edition, the amicale gathered along the Var coastline. Around twenty boats gathered, from the first GB 32s to the more recent Eastbay and Aleutian. Some of the boats were over 40 years old, weathered by the miles and fervently maintained by their owners.

The gathering will provide an opportunity to discuss the evolution of the brand, now produced by Grand Banks Yachts Limited, which has modernized its models while retaining the trawler spirit. Members of the amicale will also discuss renovation, alternative motorization, slow sailing and the transmission of maritime heritage.

A tribute to time and the sea

At a time when speed and performance often dictate the pace of yachting, the Amicale Grand Banks Méditerranée defends another philosophy: that of the long haul, of serene sailing, of a boat that lasts and is carefully maintained. Sailing at 8 knots means enjoying the scenery, respecting the sea, and savoring every mile.

35 years after its creation, the amicale still embodies this precious and timeless vision of boating. And each new gathering is as much a celebration as it is a declaration of love for the sea and the slowness of choice.
