eD 32 c-ultra, an electric carbon RIB packed with technology

Electric propulsion manufacturer eD-Tec has joined forces with a number of players to develop its first technological RIB, the eD 32 c-ultra. Built by the renowned Akermann shipyard, which builds the elegant and fast Say boats, this first 9-meter-long full-electric model is aimed at the superyacht market.

A carbon RIB built by the Akermann yard

eD-TEC, the electric performance specialist, unveils the new RIB eD 32 c-ultra, in its final phase of sea trials in Germany. As a reminder, eD-TEC developed the eD-QDrive 1 electric drive system. The company is now presenting this 9.5 m electric RIB, built by the Sven Akermann shipyard, which produces SAY brand carbon boats. Other partners, to be revealed later, were also involved in the project. The team developed and built this carbon model featuring eD-TEC's propulsion system in just nine months. The eD 32 c-ultra is based on an Akermann design, modified in the rear section to accommodate the eD-QDrive 1 propulsion units, surface propellers, eD-Technology stack and batteries. The first unit will be delivered in summer 2024.

Sailing on lakes or along coastlines

With a length of 9.5 m, a beam of 3.2 m and a draft of just 0.84 m, this model is particularly suited to lake and coastal navigation. Speeds are claimed to be fast, with 30 knots cruising and 50 on peak, all in silence. An optional thruster system can be installed to facilitate maneuvering in tight spaces. The hull has also been designed to be upgraded with foils.

Large aft cockpit volume

With no outboard motors aft, the cockpit area is more spacious for leisure activities, as evidenced by the large sundeck, with easy access to the water. The deck layout also lends itself to many other programs.

"This first version is specifically designed for the superyacht and leisure markets" explains Michael Jost, founder of eD-TEC. The company has received more specific requests, particularly from professionals.

A very large, protected cockpit

The rest of the deck layout is taken up by a center console with two seats, a glass instrument panel featuring a 15.6" MFD Axiom screen for navigation and a second screen for systems monitoring, as well as a wired MOB system and steering and throttle controls. All this is complemented by a front storage compartment, as well as a rigid hard-top offering shade and protection for the cockpit.

Numerous options for customizing your boat

Numerous options are available, including alternative colors, the addition of a modular sundeck with two additional forward-facing seats, a toilet with shower, a seat and table on the foredeck, and a 36 L refrigerator. Solar panels can be installed on the hard-top to power domestic and entertainment systems.

State-of-the-art electric propulsion

The first hull is equipped with over 100 kWh of eD-TEC batteries, providing a maximum range of 30 miles on a single charge. These are connected via the technology stack and AI BOX to the autonomous eD-QDrive 1 drive units. The drive unit has just two connectors and can be fitted and removed from the transom in less than an hour. The AI system allows updates via radio link.

The eD-QDrive units deliver up to 400 kW of peak power to the propellers, for maximum thrills. The c-ultra features not only standard 22 kW AC charging, but also 150 kW DC-DC fast charging, which can charge the batteries to 80% in just 40 minutes. eD-TEC is also developing more powerful 140 kWh batteries, which will be available in the second half of 2024.
