Olympic Games 2024: How to follow the world's best sailors in Marseille?

In the summer of 2024, the city of Marseille will host the sailing events of the Paris Olympic Games. When will the regattas take place? How to get there?

Two weeks of confrontation

For 12 days, from July 28 to August 8, 2024, 330 athletes from 40 countries will compete on the Marseilles waterfront. Eight disciplines have been selected:

As sailing is no longer part of the Paralympic Games, there will be no Paralympic events in Marseille.

An Olympic marina at the foot of the corniche

Following the success of the Test Event, which took place from July 9 to 16, 2023, work has resumed at the Roucas Blanc base. On schedule, the Olympic marina will be ready to welcome the sailing delegations. Built in the 1970s, the marina has undergone a major overhaul, with the redevelopment of 7,000 m² of buildings and the reorganization of 17,000 m² of outdoor areas.

Once the races are over, the marina will be made available to the people of Marseilles for the benefit of schoolchildren, regular sailors and top-level athletes. The site will be open during the day, and pedestrian access to the coast will be restored.

How to see the athletes?

The events will be visible to the general public from a fan zone set up on the Prado beaches. The corniche is also an interesting vantage point from which to admire the entrances and exits of the Olympic marina.

For safety reasons, the lake will be closed to pleasure craft. It will not be possible to approach the courses with your own boat. Some passenger boats will be available on reservation.

In the meantime, the athletes are training at the venues selected as preparation centers for the Games. They are designed to welcome delegations from all over the world, whether for a training camp or as a rear base during the Games. The aim is to provide an environment conducive to training, recovery from jet lag, acclimatization and optimal preparation for the events. The selected venues are :

  • Cercle Nautique et Touristique du Lacydon
  • La Nautique
  • Union Nautique Marseillaise
  • Yachting Club Pointe Rouge
  • ASPTT

You can also watch the arrival of the Olympic flame, which will enter the Old Port aboard the 3-masted Le Belem on May 8, 2024. After a round-the-world trip via the French overseas departments and territories and a tour of metropolitan France, it will reach Paris for the inauguration ceremony, which will take place on July 26, 2024.
