Grand Large, a range dedicated to comfortable cruising
AS Marine Italia produces a range of dayboats and daycruisers from 5.70 m to 8.60 m. For the past 10 years, the shipyard has partnered with Eolo to develop a range of small boats. The GL range, for Grand Large, was launched in 2022 and comprises four new models: 22, 24, 26 and 28 feet. The aim of this range is to offer boats for coastal cruising that are more comfortable to sail. And it seems to have succeeded. We tested the AS 28 GLX, the largest model in the range, on Lake Maggiore in Italy.

A Sicilian construction
This model is built in Sicily on a polyester hull. It is approved in category C. Its well-thought-out layout introduces clever equipment. At the stern, two generously-sized platforms flank the engine. Access to the cockpit is to port.

A well-appointed, comfortable cockpit
There's plenty of good-sized seating, and it's easy to get around. The rear bench features a fixed backrest and a second removable backrest. The latter allows comfortable navigation and can be tilted forward to transform the whole into a sunbathing area using the rear backrest. On the starboard side, a meridienne offers a comfortable position facing the sea, whether at anchor or underway. The aft bench seat provides ample storage space. A table can be installed for lunch.

Off-center starboard helm station
The helm station is positioned on the starboard side, as the AS 28 GLX offers a deck layout with an off-center console. The pilot's bench seats two people and lifts up to reveal a galley with sink and stove. A refrigerator is located in the polyester block facing the cockpit. The large helm console is protected by a tinted windshield when seated.

An easily accessible front beach for relaxation
The beautiful foredeck is fully equipped with a sundeck. Access is easy from the port side passage, thanks to the handrail integrated directly into the windshield.

A cabin to prolong the pleasure
Below deck, a cabin with a double berth is located at the forepeak. Toilets are separated in a cabinet with door. A washbasin can be complemented by a manual or chemical toilet. Under the companionway, a small space can be used to sleep a child, for example, or to store belongings.

Great performance without sacrificing comfort
For our test, the AS 28 GLX was equipped with a 350 hp Suzuki engine and a 22.5" propeller. Maximum power is 2x250 hp. The nearly 9-m cabin cruiser lifts off in 7 seconds, reaches 20 knots in 12 seconds and 30 knots in 16 seconds. Top speed is 40.6 knots at 5,500 rpm, with fuel consumption of 105 l/h. Its most economical speed is at 4,000 rpm. The 28 GLX cruises at 26.6 knots with a fuel consumption of 40L, or 1.5L per mile.

When sailing, the AS 28 GLX proves very comfortable and safe. The high bulwark secures the cockpit, and the steering position offers a good view of the horizon. The boat is sound, easy to handle and quite stable. As our test conditions were very fine - calm water and little wind - it's difficult to see how the boat will perform in rougher conditions. Cornering is equally secure, although the heel is a little pronounced.

With an ex-VAT price of 85,000 euros, the AS 28 GLX offers good value for money. Its well-thought-out, clever layout makes it a real family daycruiser for enjoying a day on the water, and allowing you to extend the night. Although AS Marine Italia is not yet imported into France, this model is well worth a look.
