Mimi Libeccio 8.5: a charming gozzo for Mediterranean sailing

With this walkaround version, Italian shipyard Mimi offers an alternative to its 8.5m gozzo. Take a look at this neoclassical boat, perfect for enjoying the charms of the Mediterranean.

What is a gozzo?

Historically, a gozzo is a traditional flat-bottomed boat used in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean, particularly in Italy. It is generally made of wood and has a rounded bow and flat stern. Gozzis were traditionally used for fishing and transporting goods and people along the coast.

In recent years, the gozzo concept has been revived and modernized for Mediterranean yachting. It was to target this market that Salvatore Senese founded the Mimì shipyard in Naples in 1975. The yard is still family-owned, and offers a range of boats from 6.5 to 13.5 meters.

One hull: 5 layout versions

The Mimi Libeccio 8.5 is available in five versions: Classic, Open, Sport, Cabin and walkaround. We visited the latter.

The Mimi 8.5 gate

Access to the boat is via the huge bathing platform integrated into the stern of the Mimi 8.5. A small gate in the port bulwark provides access to the boat. Its imposing teak-rimmed bulwark is raised by an elegant stainless-steel balcony for safe passage.

A large C-shaped bench seat, convertible into a sundeck or deck saloon, occupies the aft cockpit. It precedes the center console, which houses both the helm seats and a small galley.

The entire assembly tilts to access the engine hold, which is a little cramped.

The cockpit is simple and elegant. A small, curved windscreen protects the pilot and the descent.

The forward sundeck is raised to give more volume to the double cabin. Access to the forward sundeck is via a small step and gangway.

In view of its program, the mooring gear must be efficient and well-designed. This is the case aboard the Mimi 8.5, whose well-designed anchor locker can accommodate mooring lines and fenders.

The omnipresence of exotic wood elements, together with the quality of the stainless steel installed on board, give the Mimi 8.5 a luxurious, well-crafted appearance.

A modern, welcoming double cabin

Nestled under the helm station and foredeck, the Mimi 8.5's cabin offers a host of pleasant features. Access is via an attractive teak companionway. On the left is a toilet with shower and WC. It faces a small single bench seat.

The large double berth is welcoming and benefits from a light and modern color scheme. The atmosphere is warm, thanks to a subtle alternation between wood, leather and well-designed ergonomics.

Downhill, a touch-sensitive control panel provides access to all the gozzo's functions and data.

Motorization and pricing

The Mimi Libeccio 8.5 is available with three inboard diesel engines: 195, 230 or 250 hp, coupled to a shaft line. The strongest of these engines is suitable for recreational towed sports, although the Libeccio 8.5's hull is not the most efficient for this activity. Budget-wise, this gozzo with its many assets is offered in base version at 119,040 euros incl. VAT.
