Sailors and boaters often travel as much on their boats as in books and videos. Not all of us have the chance and the courage to go to the end of the world to discover these splendid Patagonian lands. Fortunately, through the images brought back by other enthusiasts, we can dream with them.
A sailing boat in the footsteps of the great navigators
Sir-Ernst is the name of a Boreal 47, left to sail in the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton. During his peregrinations, he marches in the history of Commander Charcot, in the direction of Marguerite Bay, named after his second wife.
The video relates the first stage of this expedition, carried out in 2022. It makes him take the Beagle Channel located at the extreme south of the American continent. 240km long, it borders the large island of Tierra del Fuego.

A sailboat made for ice
Sir-Ernst is a sailboat built by the Boréal shipyard located in Brittany. Its construction took two years, before being launched in 2014. This Boréal 47 is specially designed for sailing in extreme latitudes.
Its layout is simple and functional. The raised saloon and the dog-house provide excellent visibility while keeping watch inside. The balance at the helm, the centering of the weights and its storage space make it a very seaworthy boat.

The adventures of the Sir-Ernst
Before arriving in the Beagle Channel, the sailing ship Sir-Ernst made its way from north to south. Leaving in 2014 for the Channel Islands, she traced her route in Scotland, then in Norway. The sailboat then heads south to Cape Verde and crosses the Atlantic. She made a detour to the Bahamas before reaching Panama. Sir-Ernst sailed around the Polynesian islands before heading to Chile and Antarctica.
Throughout their travels, the crew recounts their adventures on a blog and in video, sharing a wealth of information and beautiful images that are just waiting to be seen.
