Sailing souvenir / How do you take a safe? Not so simple when a dolphin gets involved

Taking a trunk is an operation that can be tricky, wind and swell can be complicating factors. The dolphin must now be added to the list. Get your gaff out.

The story had been told to us, but it seemed implausible. Randy the dolphin, an old solitary male recognizable by his notch on the fin, plays with boaters who want to take a trunk. He is an old acquaintance, we regularly meet him in the Iroise Sea. The last time on the island of Sein, he played with our dinghy (read : Ile de Sein, the meeting with Randy, the solitary dolphin ).

It is by chance, a little forced by a gale that we take the cape of Roscanvel - in the roadstead of Brest - to spend the night. The shelter is nice and protected by west wind.

euros 1/2 mile from the coffers, Randy arrives. Cool, we had not yet crossed him this year. It is always a magic moment to cross dolphins. He turns around the boat, two or three times by jumping. Then he quickly takes the direction of the port, and we lose him from sight.

Gale, engine started, sails lowered, gaff, mooring lines, Winchard hook and good squall. In short, we are ready to take our trunk to spend the night.

Well, Randy comes back to see us then leaves in direction of a trunk. There, it is of the big show: on the back, on the belly, in the airs, he shows us the trunk which it is necessary to take... no doubt. Approach gently to enjoy the show.

" No, you won't take my buoy e": that's probably what he thought. Splash, headbutt, tailbutt, a real naval battle to win this chest. Impressive though, we felt his power in the shocks, his precision. The fight lasted about thirty minutes, a real hand-to-hand fight with a dolphin.

And then, we watched each other like two old friends. He stood there, head above water, looking at us before moving away, slowly.

As much for us, the human beings (we must exclude the inhabitants of the Faroe Islands, you would have guessed it), are like children when we see dolphins, but them, what can they think when they look at us ? It's funny a human... or not !
