With the free mobile application I Clean My Sea, all it takes is one photo to help clean up the sea. Every year, 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans, it is urgent to act!
What's the point?
In concrete terms, the mobile application allows everyone to send photos of plastic waste floating on the sea. A team of sailors will thus have access to their location and the forecast of their trajectory. With The Collector a boat specially designed to collect waste at sea, they go on site to collect the plastics.
In addition, the data collected via the application allows a better understanding of the phenomena of accumulation of waste at sea, their origin and therefore to fight more effectively against this pollution.
How does it work?
The I Clean My Sea mobile application is extremely simple. Once downloaded, you create an account. Then, as soon as you see a plastic waste in the sea, two solutions:
- Either you are yourself at sea, you just have to take a picture via the application and that's it.
- Either you are on the shore and see trash in the water. In this case, you indicate on the map the geographical position of the plastics and take a picture.
You will be able to see the expected drift of the waste you reported on the app.
What happens to the collected plastics?
The project of I Clean My Sea is to valorize these plastics by recycling them into "100% marine sourced" products. The proceeds from the sale of these recycled items would help finance the collection effort. Each year, tons of waste are removed from the sea by I Clean My Sea.
Where is I Clean My Sea located?
With the support of coastal communities, I Clean My Sea deploys adapted boats to collect waste in priority near estuaries. Indeed, the vast majority of plastic that ends up in the oceans arrives by the discharge of rivers into the sea. It is at this point that it is urgent to act because if the plastic waste stays too long in the water, it turns into micro-plastic impossible to remove from the oceans.
For the moment, I Clean My Sea acts on the Basque-Land coast under the direction of its founder Aymeric Jouon, oceanographer. However, he wishes to extend his field of action with other boats.
