Household vinegar is an all-purpose product that is particularly effective for cleaning, disinfecting, deodorizing, descaling and even softening laundry! It would be a shame to do without it since it is a very ecological and economical product. If you don't like the smell, you should know that it disappears as soon as the vinegar has dried. You can also combine its use with a few drops of essential oil to delicately perfume the room.
Cleaning the kettle on board
The kettle is an essential part of our boats: for tea, coffee, or Chinese noodles, it is constantly in use and also gets dirty... Limescale deposits quickly form in the bottom. To make them disappear, pour enough vinegar inside to cover the resistance. Then let it sit for a good hour before rinsing thoroughly.

Cleaning old sponges
On board a boat, sponges are put to the test: there is usually no dishwasher! So, how can you clean your kitchen utensils if your sponges are dirty? To clean them properly, you can take the time to soak them overnight in a basin with vinegar and water and then rinse them in very hot water.
Deodorize and clean toilets
There's nothing like vinegar to clean the toilet on board! Simply fill a spray bottle with vinegar, water and, if you wish, a few drops of essential oil. This mixture will clean the entire bathroom. To go deeper, pour a glass of vinegar into the bottom of the bowl and leave it overnight.

Maintain and unclog drains
To maintain your drains and fight odors, pour a capful of vinegar every week into the bungs of your sinks. But if they are clogged, a shock treatment is necessary: mix 3 tablespoons of baking soda with 3 glasses of household vinegar and pour it slowly into the clogged sink. Be careful, the mixture foams, do not breathe the fumes which are irritating.
Cutting boards
Vinegar is also very useful for washing cutting boards. This is especially true for blood-stained boards that are used to cut and gut freshly caught fish!
Fabric softener
If you have an on-board washing machine, instead of your regular fabric softener, put two tablespoons of vinegar in the dedicated tub. The result will be perfect and the vinegar will also have an anti-limescale action in your machine. Of course, it is also possible with the machines of the harbour office!
