Amateur construction: A varnished wooden motorboat for less than 6000 euros

Build a 5 m motorboat. This is what Arnaud proposed to his students in a CFA Batiment. The final result is really bluffing of quality and look. An amateur construction that leaves you dreaming.

Arnaud is a teacher like we would all like to have. He teaches at the CFA Espace Lanfry in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray (76) in the building section specialized in carpentry and wood construction. Each year, the students in CAP or BP must set up the realization of a "masterpiece". And each year, Arnaud proposes to his students subjects that are out of their universe. Thus, one year, mini caravans were created or kayaks in strip planking another year. These projects, which are out of the ordinary, are there to motivate the students to do well by using their knowledge.

A plan that looks like a Kaiser Boot

For this year 2021, the project was to realize a motorboat, a boat in the style of the Kaiser. For this our teacher went to Russia to buy a plan. The boat will measure 5,05 m x 2 m for a finished weight of 540 kg. This hull can accept an outboard up to 150 hp.

A hull in CP

The construction will take place in the CFA workshop with about 20 young people from 15 to 25 years old who will work on it. The boat is built upside down on the couples. The planks are made of 9 mm plywood while the deck, all round, is made with 2 crossed layers of 4 mm plywood covered with a Padouk veneer for decoration.

2.5 months of work

The construction of the hull started in March 2020 and was finished 2 1/2 months later. All the finishing touches were then done by Arnaud, at home during his vacations in August. Indeed, at this stage the boat is not finished. The hull still needs to be laminated with fabric and epoxy resin and then the paint and varnish layers need to be applied. No less than 10 layers on the deck!

The cockpit is also equipped with bucket seats and a rear bench covered with an elegant red skai. Stainless steel fittings complete the boat.

For the motorization, an amateur passionate by the project sells his outboard engine. It is a Mercury 90 hp from 1983. It fits perfectly in the image of the motorboat of those years.

Ready to launch

Today, the boat is almost ready to set sail. There is still the electrical part (very simple) which will be entrusted to the future electricians of the CFA. The school's metalworkers, who have already made the transom and cut out the name of the boat, have also offered to make a stainless steel bow fitting. Once homologated (in amateur construction), the boat will be able to make its first rounds in the water.

A budget of 6000 euros

But before sailing, Arnaud must have time to pass his boating license! Indeed, even if he likes boats, he is not a sailor. However, he is now at the helm of a very nice motorboat which will cost him around 6000 euros. It is indeed this professor who financed the supply of materials for the whole construction. When we tell you that we would all like to have a teacher so devoted to his studentseuros
