Test / Marshall M2, a versatile entry-level RIB

The Marshall M2 is the smallest model in the range of 4 multipurpose RIBs, but it is not without its assets. We had the opportunity to test it in the bay of La Trinité-sur-Mer, equipped with a 100 hp Suzuki engine, exclusive partner of the Italian brand.

An entry-level model

As we have already explained in the Marshall M4 test The Italian group Ribitaly has bought the RIB brand, star of the 80's, thus completing the offer of the shipyard owner of the BWA brand, more oriented towards cruising and lazing around.

The idea of this relaunch is to offer simple and functional tires, versatile, but above all with few options and an engine package stamped with Suzuki, exclusive partner.

The M2 is therefore the smallest model in the range, offering 4 boats from 5.50 m to 9.30 m. With a length of 5.54 m and a width of 2.46 m, it comes in two versions - like the other models in the range - Open and Touring. It is in this version that we have tested it. This one differs from the first version by its sunbathing area at the front. Its neoprene hypalon floats are also available in several colors - black and red upholstery - or grey and grey upholstery. These are very wide and offer excellent stability on the water, both when sailing and when drifting for fishing.

A simple and functional layout

In the back, the seatback can be folded down to raise the engine. This one contains a large storage box, with an access to the technical trapdoor. There is also a net under the hood to store things, but we would have preferred to have it close by like on the M4. But unfortunately, the M2 does not have a leaning-post, like its big brother.

The console is central as on the rest of the range and protected by a high windscreen with stainless steel posts on which to stand when navigating. The pilot can sit on the back seat or stand upright, a more comfortable position when navigating. The front of the console has a seat with a front handrail for standing. Unlike the other models, the M2 has mechanical steering (by cable).

Finally, the front sundeck contains an easily accessible storage box, the length of which allows handling without pinching your fingers.

For our test, the M2 received a Suzuki 4-stroke engine of 100 HP (115 in max power) with a 3-blade propeller - 13,75 x 19. Despite a 0.5 to 1 m chop, the boat remains playful and goes through the sea easily, without too much jerking. It behaves healthily in the turns, relying on its floats which gives it stability. It will take 3500 rpm for the boat to reach its lift-off speed, 15 knots (8.1 L/h). The M2 reaches a maximum speed of 33 knots (30.1 L/h) with a 50% trim. Its cruising speed is between 22 and 23 knots (4000/4500 rpm) for a fuel consumption between 17 and 18L/H.

This boat with a marine behavior allows to practice many nautical activities, in particular towed sports or fishing, activity that we could practice in the drift. When sailing, you will appreciate being able to stand next to the pilot, a more comfortable position than sitting on the front bench. As on its big brother, with the sea, the passengers risk to be wet, so plan a good raincoat. The pilot navigates in the dry, well protected behind the windshield.
