List of essentials for a successful day at sea

A day boat trip organizes a little upstream: you choose the destination, prepare the route and decide when to go. Nothing oublié?? When you board even for a small trip at sea, a list of essentials can be useful to make the most of it.

Of course, a day trip is not like a long crossing. If sailing means accepting a percentage of unforeseen events, a few reflexes are good to take so as not to ruin a beautiful day at sea and deprive yourself of a good deal of pleasure.

Checking weather forecasts

Although we have been able to rejoice for several days now in the announced conditions, it is only on D-Day that we will be able to make some shots on the weather comet. Just before casting off for this beautiful little trip at sea, you need to have the reflex of the weather update.

Thanks to our mobile phones, many applications make it possible to plan navigation and above all to have a good idea of the evolution of the day's weather conditions. The wind can change quickly during the day as with sea breezes or a Mistral .

Caution dictates that it should be remembered that these are only forecasts. This is always more accurate than predictions, but by definition they can turn out to be false. We must therefore remain attentive to changes in the weather, which will inevitably change our navigation plans.

Sun protection accessories

Getting away from sun protection, forgetting your glasses, a cap or sunscreen are the best ways to ruin a great day of summer sailing.
In addition to direct radiation, it is also necessary to protect against reverberation. Without protection, we are at the mercy of the sun and its harmful radiation reflected on the water, deck and sails.

Quality sunglasses are essential for vision comfort, but also for safety, as the right course may require facing the sun. A protection factor 4 is strongly recommended, in addition with polarized lenses you will benefit from a better view of the water and clouds.

The cap is the minimum necessary to avoid sunstroke or headaches. Even better, the wide-brimmed hat and support cord will offer you superior protection. The old sea bass style takes a hit, but at sea it doesn't matter.

Keep spare clothing

When the sun declines or is masked by a few clouds, but also when the wind rises, you should be able to put on a windbreaker. This is the sine qua non condition to continue to enjoy the day and avoid experiencing a cold resistance test.

It is equally important to have a few extra clothes available if necessary. A small wave, some wetting scoundrels spray the clothes can definitely spoil the exit. So, provide a (waterproof) bag with a windproof jacket, sweater, spare pants. You will then consider the few spray, which flies overboard, with a wide smile and without fear of ruining the day.

Food and Beverages

There is nothing worse than shortening the time at sea for a long time, because hunger or thirst is spreading to the crew. Even for an outing of a few hours, make sure you have enough food, but above all a suitable meal.

At anchor, you can take the time to prepare a mixed salad, but at sea it will be easier to have sandwiches at hand.

Hydration is essential, wind, sun, salty air, efforts will soon dehydrate us, too much fresh water has never been lacking on board.

Safety equipment

The safety equipment of boats requires one lifejacket per person on board. Whatever the wind conditions and experience, even for a day trip it is advisable to wear it.

A seasoned skipper who takes novices to sea must be the first to put on his clothes, not only to set an example, but also because neophytes will, by definition, find it very difficult to help him. The current life jackets make it possible not to feel crowded even in the middle of summer.
