1. Nazaré in Portugal
Nazaré is a Portuguese city located on the Atlantic coast north of Lisbon. If every year it attracts the best surfers in the world, it is for its world famous surf spot the Canyon de Nazaré. Competitions to surf the world's biggest waves are regularly organised there.
The latest record is that of Brazilian Maya Gabeira, 31 years old with an estimated wave height of 20.72 metres.
2. Biarritz, France
Biarritz is located a few miles from Anglet, with which it shares beautiful waves and superb spots. Considered as the cradle of surfing in Europe, the city obtained in October 2015, the label Ville de surf - 3 stars, awarded by the French Surf Federation.
3. San Sebastian, Spain
In addition to being one of the prettiest destinations in Europe, San Sebastian attracts thousands of travellers from all over the world to the famous Zurriola Beach spot every year. This beach is the most dynamic and lively in San Sebastian and has become in a few years a popular destination for surfers. Considering the number of surfers in the water, you might think you're in Australia.
4. Barge, Portugal
Until recently, Peniche, located in the centre of the country on the Atlantic coast, was still an island surrounded by the sea. Every year, surfers come to surf on the big waves that lick the coasts, and in particular the beach of "Supertubos" known worldwide for its tubular waves.
5. Hossegor, France
Hossegor is located only 30 minutes from Biarritz airport. Thanks to the steep ascent of the bottom from the Cape Breton Gully Trench, it benefits from powerful and massive waves over a long distance. And another advantage is that it offers for those who don't like surfing a friendly destination with endless moors, beautiful beaches and colourful Basque houses.
6. Anglet, France
Like its sisters, Anglet is located on the Silver Coast, from the Pointe de Grave to the mouth of the Adour, and known for its straight and sandy coast, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean and its powerful rollers that break through it.
With its 11 international spots, Anglet attracts a large population of surfers every year.
7. Tenby, United Kingdom
Tendy is located in Pembrokeshire, in southern Wales. If the city is known to have been Robin Hood's film location, it is also known for its surf spots. With its relatively exposed beach, and its uniform waves (although flat in summer), it offers pretty rolls.
Depending on your level of experience and desires, you will choose to surf the beaches of Freshwater West, West Dale or Marloes for those looking for a little peace and quiet.
8. Bundoran, Ireland
Bundoran is the Irish surf capital. The north-west coast of Ireland is full of mythical spots whose wave quality is well proven. The most famous of them is "The Peak", with the most impressive waves in Ireland, almost all year round.
Tullanstrand will suit the less adventurous with a pretty beach and quality waves, again all year round.
9. Perros Guirec, France
Waves all year round, a unique lake along the Pink Granite Coast, Perros-Guirec is the ideal place to practice surfing. The International Surfing Day has been organised there several times. To enjoy beautiful waves and a good swell, surf between September and May.
10. Munich, Germany
Although it may seem surprising, Munich is one of the best surfing destinations in Europe. It offers the opportunity to surf on a wild river in the heart of the Englischer Garten, a green space of nearly 375 hectares located in the northeast part of Munich. You can surf on the Eisbach River. No need to plan your visit, the wave is present all year round and awaits you at any time of the day.
