The drone, the sail photographer's new ally?

Winner of the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image © Sören Hese

134 photographers from all over the world (27 participating countries!) entered the famous professional sea photography competition, Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image. The award ceremony for this 2017 edition took place on 28 November at the Yacht Racing Forum in Aarhus (Denmark). And the great winner is German. No French on the podium as the other two titles go to the Spanish Tomàs Moya and the Hungarian Zita Kovács.

We now know the worthy successor of Jean-Marie Liot, best sailing photographer of the year 2016 . There were 20 photographers selected for the final stretch - out of 134 registered at the start - including 4 French and 4 Russian (the two most represented countries). The objective was to present a snapshot illustrating the 2017 sailing season and to show the diversity of this sport

The award ceremony held on 28 November 2017 in Denmark unanimously dedicated the German photographer Sören Hese and his photo taken during the 505 International Championship in Berlin, Germany, in May 2017. The jury recognized the originality and complex technique used to create this photo. "This gives us an idea of the type of images we will see in the future, thanks to the use of drones that is developing." said Rob Kohte, founder of the Sail-World network and member of the jury.

This photograph is the result of a series of 15 images taken by a drone flying 100 m above the regatta. All the images were then compiled without any retouching thanks to a specific algorithm. "I am very proud because this contest is the absolute reference in regatta photography."

Dmitry Sharomov (RUS) and Sander van der Borch (NED) completed the podium.
