The Calypso arrived in Turkey in April 2016 to be renovated. A colossal job considering the state of disrepair in which it had been since 2009. Since then, the work has progressed well and all the frames of the former minesweeper have been renovated.

There is no unemployment in the Turkish construction site of Aykin, in the district of Istanbul! The hangar housing the ship is now completed and the ship was transferred to its new residence on 4 October 2016. While waiting for the hangar to be completed, all defective parts of the ship had been removed so that they could be replaced with new frames.

This winter, Calypso was placed in a greenhouse so that the glued laminate could be worked in the right temperature conditions. Temporary couples were installed for the duration of the work. The frames were all replaced.

Crews began work on the bowsprits, while the stern keel was repaired and additional reinforcements installed. The planking break is underway. Barroting is in progress.

Four bridgeheads have already been cast. The Volvo engines are also in perfect working order according to the Cousteau Society.

The Calypso was still under cocoon to dry the epoxy, due to the low winter temperatures in Turkey. It will take another year of work for Calypso to come out of its yard.

Work to follow..
