360° pictures / Antares 7 and 8, the revival of fishing and walking at Bénéteau

Antares 7

Presented jointly with the trial by Bénéteau, the Antares 7 and 8 show a beautiful image of the revival of fishing and walking. The label of a boat for the elderly is over, instead of that of a boat for a small family cruise. But how do you choose between 7 and 8? A sea trial showed us the similarities and differences between the two models.

By launching the Antares 7 and 8 Bénéteau was tackling a big issue. Indeed, these two models replace the Antares 680 and 780, two best-selling models in the range. In other words, the designers and designers were expected at the turn by the marketing teams in charge of selling these boats.

The challenge was considerable, it was necessary to keep the historical line of the Antares while modernizing it. These boats are designed on a new hull. This one does not use the Air Step technology (present on the Flyer range) for cost reasons (Air Step is more expensive to produce). On the other hand, the V of the hull is more pronounced than on the older models and the bow is well tuliped to deflect the waves without wetting the wheelhouse.

The entire boat has been designed for family use. It is a real weekend for a small cruise for 4 people. It is precisely on comfort and living space that the 2 models differ.

On the organization of the edge, the 2 models are identical. Powered by an outboard motor, framed by 2 platforms, these boats have a fully modular cockpit. The U-shaped bench surrounds a dining table. But this cockpit turns into a huge sunbathing area for relaxation. But if the use of the boat is fishing, part of the bench can be unloaded to completely clear the cockpit. Then only the back seat remains.

Note the very far back position of this rear seat. A dictated choice to save space in this cockpit. But to allow the outboard engine to be raised, without it hitting the backrest of the bench, the bench slides forward. A clever way to save space...

As you enter the wheelhouse, you are greeted by a great feeling of brightness. This is partly due to the large windows, the very wide front windscreen and the roof deck hatch that opens when sliding. A panel available as an option on both models, but which really adds a plus to this interior.

In this boat size, the yard has managed to install a comfortable saloon for 4 people - and can be transformed into a double berth - but above all a bench facing the ideal road for crew members during sailing. A kitchen with sink, gas stove, fire and fridge faces this square.

Below, under the foredeck, there is a double berth in the forward point and a toilet with WC under the helm station. This space closed by a door has a porthole opening on the Antares 8, but absent on the 7.

The foredeck can be equipped with a sunbathing bath and a wooden dolphinière, above the anchor, which facilitates access from the bow. Scandinavian countries like to install a ladder to access the boat from the bow.

We were able to test these two models with their maximum power. The Antares 7 was equipped with a 175 hp Suzuki while the 8 had a 200 hp outboard. These powerful engines certainly provide comfort, but there is no doubt that the recommended powers are sufficient for the boat's family program. For example, the maximum speed of the Antares 7 is 33 knots with 175 hp while it is 31 knots with 150 hp. Note the near ubiquity of the outboard in these markets. More expensive, heavier and maintenance-intensive inboard engines are no longer available.

Which one to choose between Antares 7 and 8?

Heavier, more voluminous, the Antares 8 passes much better at sea, it hits less. It offers a more reassuring behaviour, especially when sailing a family with children. But this model is also more expensive (10,000 euros more). Facing it, the Antares 7 offers as many possibilities with the same number of beds, the same number of seats and the same bathroom. But on board everything is smaller, narrower. However, the budget is also much more affordable. The choice is yours!
