Steeler Ocean Explorer 67: The Technical Choices Behind a Yacht Designed for Long-Distance Voyages

The Steeler Ocean Explorer 67 measures 21.45 meters and displaces 88 metric tons at half load. Behind these figures lies a yacht designed based on the specifications of a couple of long-distance sailors. In particular, a width constraint led the Dutch shipyard to adopt an unusual architectural design.

Making the switch from a long-range sailing yacht to a motor yacht without giving up long-distance cruising raises a number of very practical questions. Range, seakeeping, living space, deck layout, and the ability to live aboard for extended periods all factor into the equation. The first Ocean Explorer 67 from Steeler Yachts was born precisely from these specifications.

A motor yacht born out of a project by two long-distance sailors

The inspiration for the Ocean Explorer 67 wasn't simply a desire to shorten an existing model. The project got its start after the 2024 Boot Düsseldorf boat show, when a couple with extensive experience in long-distance sailing approached the Dutch shipyard Steeler Yachts.

The owners wish to continue their voyages around the world, but aboard a motor yacht. They are therefore interested in the Ocean Explorer 72 and its living space. However, one constraint has altered the plans: the future vessel must not exceed 5.60 m in beam.

This limitation is significant on a yacht of this size. The beam directly determines the interior volume, the exterior walkways, and the overall layout of the main deck. With an overall length of 21.45 m and a hull length of 20.40 m, the Ocean Explorer 67 has a beam of exactly 5.60 m.

However, the boat retains the design principles of the Ocean Explorer series. It is a displacement yacht featuring a steel hull with rounded bilges and an aluminum superstructure.

Its stated displacement is 88 metric tons at 50% load. The draft is 1.55 meters with the fuel tanks full. The CE A classification corresponds to the offshore program selected for the vessel.

Just one pass-through to regain width in the layout

How can you maintain ample interior volume when the maximum beam is fixed? Steeler opted for an asymmetrical design. Instead of installing two walkways running along the deckhouse, the deck plan retains only one. The space normally reserved for outdoor passage on the other side is thus incorporated into the main deck layout. This choice increases the available interior width without increasing the beam. Obviously, it does not create additional square meters within the hull; rather, it alters their distribution.

For a boat intended to serve as a home for extended periods, this compromise makes sense. Gaining a few dozen centimeters across a section of the main deck affects the width of the saloon, the furnishings, and the possibilities for moving around inside. But this design also has its drawbacks. With only one gangway, movement between the cockpit and the foredeck is no longer symmetrical. The organization of maneuvers, crew movement, and access to the deck must therefore be planned with the retained side in mind.

Steel and aluminum for an 88-metric-ton hull

The Ocean Explorer 67 retains its all-metal construction. The hull is made of steel, while the superstructures are made of aluminum. Steel is commonly used in displacement-type vessels due to its mechanical properties and the repair options it offers. However, its use results in significant weight and requires rigorous protection against corrosion.

The choice of aluminum for the upper sections avoids adding unnecessary weight above the center of gravity. However, combining the two metals requires special expertise in assembly and galvanic isolation. The information provided by the shipyard does not detail the processes used on this Ocean Explorer 67.

The displacement hull features rounded shapes and a narrow-entry bow. According to Steeler, this geometry is designed to minimize drag and spray.

Two 290-kW MAN engines for displacement propulsion

The first Ocean Explorer 67 is powered by two MAN D2676 LE484 engines, each producing 394 ch. This power output should be viewed in the context of the boat?s stated 88-metric-ton displacement at half load. The Ocean Explorer 67 is not designed for speed, but rather for cruising with a displacement hull.

Three cabins for owners and guests

The layout of the first vessel, named Nikitoo, includes three cabins and three bathrooms, including a bathroom that can be used during the day. A separate cabin is reserved for the crew. This distinction is important on a boat designed for extended voyages. The design is not limited to simply increasing the number of berths; it is also essential to preserve living spaces and a certain degree of privacy between owners, guests, and any crew members.

The Ocean Explorer line is designed around flexible layouts. Depending on the project, configurations range from two suites with an office to four guest cabins. On board this first 67, the interior design was entrusted to Annemarie Dottinga and Pim Dijksman. Walnut is one of the prominent materials used in the design, paired with textiles in neutral tones and accented with touches of teal and copper.

Beyond the decor, the key consideration for the sailor remains the boat?s usability at sea. On a boat that will serve as a home for several weeks or months, storage, access to technical systems, ventilation, and the separation of spaces quickly become more important than they would be during a simple summer cruise.

From sailboats to motor yachts: a change in plans rather than a change in philosophy

Nikitoo?s story ultimately illustrates a transition that some long-distance sailors are experiencing. The shift from sailing to motoring does not necessarily mean giving up crossings and life on board. But the constraints change. A sailboat derives its propulsive power from its rigging. A motor yacht depends on its fuel and therefore places mechanical autonomy at the center of its design. In exchange, its design can devote more space to living areas and eliminate some of the constraints imposed by the rigging.

With its 21.45 m length, 5.60 m beam, steel hull, 88-metric-ton displacement, and asymmetrical deck layout, the Ocean Explorer 67 clearly reflects these design trade-offs.

The first unit is set to be unveiled to the public at the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival. Above all, this will be an opportunity to see firsthand on the actual boat what the numbers don?t yet reveal: the extra width gained thanks to the single walkway, the layout of the passageways on board, and the configuration of the technical spaces required for a yacht designed for long-distance voyages.
