Boating license / When I arrive in port at night, what color lighthouse will guide me?

I'm planning to arrive in Piriac-sur-Mer at night. What color lighthouse will guide me through the harbor channel? Will it be white, as this is the area that protects against rocks? Answer A. Will it be color-changing, as the light is green, red and white? Answer B. I can't tell from the map what color it will be, but I'll see when I get there? Answer C.

Every week, we present you with a question about your boating license. To help you validate your knowledge, or discover new and unexplored areas. This week, we tackle a question on cartography and lighthouses.

A sector fire

The SHOM chart shows that the port of Piriac-sur-Mer is protected by a sector light, identified by the words WRG. Depending on our position, this light will be visible with a different color. Each sector, shown on the chart with dotted lines, is marked with a letter :

  • R = Red
  • G = Green
  • W = White

For this port, the red sectors represent the dangerous zone where you shouldn't venture because of the numerous pitfalls. The green sector is not totally clear, but can be sailed around the northern cardinal of Grand Norven. Finally, the white sector marks the free zone, which guides boats directly into the harbour channel.

When sailing at night, prudence dictates that you stay in this white sector and watch that you don't leave it.
