Prepare the coastal boat licence with the Vagnon Code

Vagnon codes for his coastal option pleasure licence

There are two main publishers to train for the coastal option: Vagnon and Rousseau. The Vagnon code is presented in 3 booklets: code, memento and test. Written in a way a little too literary, photos and drawings come to lighten the text a little. A plus for the Memento Vagnon, which groups together the essentials of the code!

The coastal package of the Vagnon code consists of 3 booklets easily recognizable by their yellow colour:

  • The Vagnon code Pleasure licence coastal option
  • The Memento Vagnon Pleasure licence coastal option
  • The Vagnon Pleasure License Coastal Option Test

The Vagnon code Pleasure licence coastal option

The Vagnon Code is a 152-page booklet that presents in a complete and simple manner the program necessary to learn the coastal permit. It addresses 5 themes for a total of 18 objectives :

  • Boater safety (individual, collective safety, means of communication, etc.)
  • The boater's essentials (weather report, beaconing...)
  • The responsibilities of the yachtsman (responsibility of the skipper, means of distress, natural environment...)
  • The driving of the boat (starting, trajectory, speed, stop, reverse...)
  • The manoeuvres of the boat (arriving and departing from a dock, taking a safe, anchoring/anchoring, recovering a person who has fallen into the water...)

From the first pages, we start with a lexicon, which allows us to learn the vocabulary adapted to navigation (shelter, tack, bitter, beacon, wandering, foreshore, ebb, tidal range, thousand, beam...). We will then learn to detect the signals that make it possible to navigate safely, namely day and night markings, port signals, the marine chart or the weather and tides. This part is the main part of the learning booklet since you must know the signs and know how to evaluate the weather and the sea to be able to navigate safely.

The second part concerns the vessels and here too, we find some nautical definitions (sailing vessel, vessel fishing, vessel not in charge of its manoeuvre, vessel with erre...). The aim here is to learn to recognise ships by their day and night markings (black markings for day markings and bright and coloured markings for night markings) Then come the helm and course rules, i.e. how to react in the face of nearby vessels (at anchor or on the move), depending on their activities and nature (sail or motor) or the place where you are sailing (channel, DST...) A final section on sounds details how to indicate your intentions using sound means.

Then come four small chapters on water activities (water skiing, VNM, diving...), safety (mandatory equipment, distress signals...), VHF (radio at sea which allows communication with the surrounding boats as well as with the ports or rescue units) and environmental protection. Finally, a paragraph on practical training concludes the apprenticeship.

Our opinion

Each paragraph is illustrated with photos, drawings, tables, diagrams, maps or graphics. The text is black and yellow and the important passages where the key words are bolded. Examples support the theory. The whole is complete, clear, legible and easy to find in the booklet thanks to the heading clearly indicated at the top of each right page. The whole presentation remains a little dark with slightly dark colours and paragraphs a little long. Using a slightly sad layout makes reading a little less fun.

The Memento Vagnon Pleasure licence coastal option

To facilitate learning and keep only the essentials of the code, Vagnon offers a Memento. Very practical, this 47 pages booklet consists of 2 parts. 14 pages of Memento that synthesize the Vagnon code and include all the elements to know to pass its code (tagging, summary table of day and night marks, mandatory equipment, cardinals...). There follow 32 pages of mock exams with answers to practice the code.

This small booklet is very practical and light and slips easily into its bag and can be taken anywhere to revise its code

The Vagnon Coastal Pleasure Licence Test

This 128-page booklet consists of topic-based MCQs (11 topics) and 5 30-question practice questions. The first part allows us to train particularly on a theme that poses a problem for example.
