Test / Birdyfish : A dinghy with a good price on the flying boat market

Launching of a Birdyfish

Birdyfish pricing and options. This last part of our test of the foil dinghy allows us to confirm an interesting positioning of the sailboat on the booming market of foil machines, monohull or multihull.

A clear and simple boat offer

For simplicity's sake, the Birdyfish's builder has limited the number of options to a minimum. The boat, built in glass-polyester sandwich infusion, is offered with its aluminum mast and sails (mainsail and jib, manufactured by Delta Voiles) at a price of 18,480 euros (all taxes included). The dinghy is thus ready to sail in its standard version.

As an option, the yard offers 3 main accessories:

  • code 0, allowing to increase the surface from 14 m² to 22 m², at a rate of 1620euros TTC
  • a jib furler to facilitate the maneuvers, for 528euros TTC
  • a launching trailer to leave and return from the beach or the slipway, also at 528euros TTC

The price of the boat with all options reaches 21 156euros TTC

A regatta version with a more elaborate sail set should be proposed during winter 2022.

Among the most affordable boats to fly

If the purchase of a Birdyfish is obviously not within the reach of everyone, the dinghy is well positioned on its market to fulfill its specifications: to make flying boats accessible. Few monohull dinghies with foils can accommodate two crew members. The Peacoq', a boat of the same size recently launched, is advertised at 33,600 euros TTC. We can also include the F101, a kind of monohull with a narrow foil, stabilized by 2 floats. The English boat, built in carbon, is proposed in standard version with sails for 23 500euros TTC.

On the multihull side, the Befoil 16 Sport catamaran, recently tested in our columns, is offered in a standard version at 24,900 euros TCC.

A robust compromise adapted to schools and boaters alike

If the investment is not insignificant, it undoubtedly offers an interesting gateway to the sensations of flying over water with a sail. The schools were not mistaken, seeing it as an accessible support adapted to their uses by the choice of materials. Of the 18 boats sold, 90% were to clubs. "It also allows us to have a network of local partners so that people can try the boat near their home" confirms Jean-Baptiste Morin, Birdyfish sales manager. An invitation that should not leave anyone indifferent. Sailing pleasure guaranteed!
