What is the purpose of VHF channel 70?

This channel is reserved and should not be used for voice calls. Indeed, it is the channel which allows to launch DSC calls (Digital Selective Call).

In case of distress, a voice call can be made using channel 16. If you activate the DISTRESS button on your VHF by pressing the button for several seconds, channel 70 will automatically be used. This channel 70 should not be used for voice calls.

In marine, the channels used to talk from boat to boat are 06, 08, 72 and 77. You may also have to use 09 (port contact), 10 (semaphore) or 18 (lock). And of course keep an eye on 16 to ensure common safety on the water.
