Web series / Grégoire Chéron - Mini 887 : First night navigation

Grégoire Chéron will participate in the Mini-Transat 2021 aboard the Mini 887. And to share his adventure with us, every month he produces videos on different themes. Today, it's time for his first night navigation.

The Mini Transat is a race reserved for Mini 6.50's, which consists of crossing the Atlantic to reach the West Indies from France. For several weeks, the sailors have to manage their navigation alone, especially at night.

So to train for these future nights lost on the deep blue sea, Grégoire decided to make a tour of the Glénan archipelago in Brittany. But before spending the night at sea, preparation is essential, starting with the routing. Once at sea, Grégoire will only have a GPS and a VHF for navigation. He will therefore have to enter the various coordinates (waypoints) to be followed in his GPS.

Then it's time for navigation, where he has to manage the route, food and especially sleep. No question of spending the night in the warmth, an alarm goes off after 20 minutes of rest in order to keep watch and trim the sails. A rather easy exercise this time, since Gregory is accompanied by a cameraman friend.

It is in the early morning that the loop will end after 8 hours of sailing under a starry sky and a clear stretch of water. An experience which allows him to realise that it's difficult to keep up with this frenetic pace, and that he will nevertheless have to do so for several days when he takes the start of the Mini Transat.
