Sébastien Destremau completed the last Vendée Globe 2016-17 on his IMOCA FaceOcean. Of course he came in last place 50 days after the winner, but he is now one of the sailors who have completed this round the world solo, without stopovers and without assistance.
Of this success, this sailor has written a book: "Alone in the world" in which he describes (a little) his journey and a lot of the path that led him to Les Sables-d'Olonne to take the start.
Serge Fino, comic book illustrator, met Sébastien Destremau at a book fair where the sailor was signing his book. This meeting, and encouraged by their affinity with the Toulon region from which they come, brought them closer together. The cartoonist decided to put the book in pictures.
Today, he presents the first volume named "Chanteloube" after the family boat of the Destremau family. The story of the comic strip is almost identical to the one of the free book, taking up the back and forth between the present in the race and Sébastien's childhood. This first volume tells us, among other things, about the purchase of the boat and the homologation problems encountered to start the race.
The drawings by Serge Eno (author of "Les Chasseurs d'Écume") are very realistic. The designer has taken the option of making the drawings and colouring without using a computer, but just his brushes and watercolours, he delivers a very personal comic strip that is different from what we find on the shelf today.
Readers who have read the book will not be disoriented. For the others, this comic book tells the story of this atypical round the world trip that Sébastien Destremau, a good sailor, finished in 124 days.
