The hurricane season began on June 1, 2019 in the North Atlantic. To avoid the worst, Sea Tow US Maritime Assistance Service provides some tips to prepare for the hurricane season. Overseas boaters, here's how to get organized in the coming months.

Five months of hurricane season

The hurricane season in the North Atlantic is that of the hurricanes . According to the World Meteorological Organization, it is taking place for the year 2019 from 1 January er june to November 30. During this period, meteorological and scientific services forecast the number of tropical storms hurricanes and major hurricanes (from category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale).

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. agency responsible for studying the ocean and atmosphere, this Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be close to normal (40% chance of being normal). There is a 30% probability that it is below or above the average.

In concrete terms, this means that there should be:

  • 9 to 15 storms with winds over 34 knots
  • Of which 4 to 8 could become hurricanes (winds of 64 knots or more)
  • Of which 2 to 4 could be major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5?; with winds of 96 knots or more).

These data are 70% certain, confirms NOAA. An average hurricane season generates 12 storms, 6 of which become hurricanes, including 3 major hurricanes.

How to access préparer??

1 - Check your insurance policy

A damaged boat can cost much more to repair than insurance would have cost you all year round. Check the terms and conditions of your insurance policy and ensure that you comply with them. Some insurances require owners to move their boats out of cyclonic areas. Remember to do so before the deadline.

2 - Choose a manager

Most insurances require a written "hurricane plan" detailing where and how your boat should be secured during a major storm. If you are out of town and a hurricane is threatening, designate someone to secure your boat.

3 - Choose a place on

Check with your marina or shipyard to find out if it is possible to leave your boat moored or stored during the hurricane. If so, check with them about the procedure to follow to secure not only your boat, but also those next door. A boat that comes off could damage yours.

4 - Anticipate

If you have to change your boat's location in case of a storm, decide on its new location before the hurricane is announced. Check with some insurers or marine assistance and find the right carrier if you need it.

5 - Immortalize your boat

Make an inventory - video or photo - of all fixed equipment - such as electronic devices - that you cannot remove from your boat. Store all important documents concerning your boat, including your marine insurance policy, in a safe place outside your boat.
