Web series / Quantified report on the amateur construction of a Marauder

"Desired" Etienne's Marauder is now sailing. After successful stability tests, he can navigate with confidence. Now is the time to take stock of these 1.5 years of construction: technical and financial assessment.

Stability and recovery tests

I wanted to carry out the buoyancy and righting tests as advised by the architect. These tests took place on La Vilaine just before the Arzal dam. This location was chosen by François Vivier because it offers a depth of 8.00 m, which is necessary for the complete turning of the boat. His new oar sail, the "Mesquer", served as an assistance boat. This last plan was drawn for the special edition of the magazine Le Bouvet.

"Désiré" was deliberately capsized between two catways in the port of Arzal. We found that the boat straightens up immediately without human intervention, the force to be applied at the masthead to keep it down is 6 kg.

Then the boat was completely filled with water:

1- in position with the mast horizontal, the boat is in balance, even with a crew member inside.

2- a crew of 4 people was loaded (about 320 kg): the boat floats with a margin of about ten cm with some stability.

In view of this observation, it was not considered necessary to turn it completely 180°. The tests conducted ensure compliance with ISO 12217.

I can now sail with Désiré in complete serenity. It has all the regulatory documents: navigation chart, test report and expert report for insurance purposes. I had the pleasure of installing the regulatory nameplate in accordance with Division 245 of the Ship Safety Regulations.

At the time of the assessment

The construction represented about 650 hours of work, which is the minimum expected by his architect François Vivier.

This time count takes into account:

  • the cutting of plywood and the machining of raw wood, which I estimate at a little over a hundred hours, but which I could have had done
  • modifications made to my boat:
    - anchor locker
    - cabin windows
    - cabin descent

Exchanges and research in technology, equipment, suppliers... are not quantified.

This financial statement adds up all the expenses of useful supplies to build a CI Marauder. The price indications are taken from the work carried out between 2018 and 2019.

Personal assessment

As I said in the first article, I realized my dream. I am, in all modesty, proud to have completed this adventure. "Desired" is beautiful. As I undertook this project, I had no idea how much pleasure it would bring me, how many meetings it would bring, how much expertise it would bring me. At no time did I regret having embarked on this adventure, quite the contrary.

I hope that this testimony will inspire others to get started. My secret hope is to see new projects opened and other little brothers of "Désiré" take to the sea. For that, I remain available to provide all the information you need!
