OSIRIS, the French gauge

The Osiris is a French gauge system managed by the FFV and recognized by the ISAF (International Sailing Federation). It appeared in 2015, and like all handicap gauges, it should enable different sailboats to balance their chances in regattas.

The Osiris is a gauge of the FFVoile (French Sailing Federation) and applies only in France. It is an evolution of the HN gauge (now disappeared), which was empirical and based on the observation of race results to derive potential speed statistics by boat.

Now, by integrating a speed prediction system (VPP) to adjust obsolete HN ratings or to evaluate the rating of a new yacht, it rivals the reference handicap gauge: the IRC gauge. Traditionally or to be attractive to runners, OSIRIS is simpler and more economical than IRC.

Two levels of gauge "contract" are offered by the FFVoile:

Standard boats

They concern a majority of sailboats. It is those that have not been modified by their owners, and whose characteristics are identical to those declared by the yards, that produce this model. These series boats exist in the FFV Sailing reference tables and have a gross rating that they can use during the regatta.

Modified boats

On the other hand, if modifications affect or optimize the performance of your boat (different sails, weight...), you can adjust your new rating by declaring these modifications to the FFV. The latter will be based on the expertise of the Offshore Racing Congress (ORC). This organization, delegated by the International Sailing Federation (the World Sailing), develops measurement tools, including performance prediction programs (VPPs).

For modified vessels, OSIRIS is based on the combination of two gauging systems: the existing and available database of the HN empirical gauge and the ORC scientific speed prediction gauge.
