The sailor's bag: the outfit for sailing

Sailing on deck needs to be well protected, to protect from the cold and humidity. Breathable and water-repellent models that wick away perspiration and resist spray will be preferred to stay dry at all times. Here are the essentials to take in your sailor's bag to participate actively in navigation.

The watch jacket or wax jacket Lifejacket: preferably light and not too bulky, it is waterproof to protect the sailor from rain, spray and wind. Some are equipped with an integrated flotation device, but prefer a lifejacket with a harness. For occasional sailing, there are low-cost jackets that do the job well.

The windproof jacket When it's not raining too much, you can swap your watch jacket for a windproof jacket. It protects from the wind while not hindering the sailor's movements. A good compromise! The soft-shell also delays the moment when you put on your oilskin.

The wax pants or the overalls Waxed pants are still mandatory when sailing at night, even in the tropics. At night, humidity covers the deck and it is essential to protect yourself.

Navigation boots : Choose breathable and non-slip models. They can be equipped with adjustable gaiters to be waterproof. For the anecdote, always choose a size above, otherwise they could tighten you too much, cut the blood circulation and promote cold.

Fleece underwear Fleece: Favour fine fleece models rather than lycra, they will help regulate perspiration during exercise. Opt for long johns and an undershirt made of synthetic material for good thermal comfort, especially under a fleece. Even when wet, they remain warm (unlike cotton, which should be banned!).

The fleece Fleece: Fleece under a watch jacket protects from the cold and preserves from irritation due to humidity and friction. It is advisable to avoid rough fabrics around the neck and sleeves.

The cap In wool or fleece, it protects the sailor's head, which is more sensitive to temperature changes. A warm head ensures good blood circulation and warms the hands!

The gloves Depending on the season, you can choose between a pair of mittens or a full pair. In good weather, the mitt protects the palms when handling the ropes and leaves the fingertips free for precision handling such as knots. In winter, choose a neoprene model, which keeps you warm, even when wet.

The headlamp Fixed on the forehead, the headlamp allows to light where you look, while leaving your hands free. Useful for sailing at night or for DIY in the bilge! Choose a waterproof model and don't forget the spare batteries!
